Kaya families and friends, I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and the wonderful, but warm weather.
We have a number of activities happening at the school in the coming weeks. Ride to School and Harmony Day will be celebrated on Friday 24 March. Students are encouraged to dress in orange on this day to recognise and celebrate our diversity, inclusiveness and belonging. We will have three points set up outside the school for those students and families who wish to ride/scooter/wheel into school together. Please find details and map below.
Families are encouraged to stay if they are free as we will have our first family morning tea on this day. Morning tea will commence from 9:00am in J Block, and will go for about an hour. It will be an opportunity to say hello, listen to stories about school holidays, ask questions, and discuss if there are any information sessions parents would like held throughout the year. We plan on hosting two family morning teas each term. Morning tea – Friday 24 March from 9:00am.
Families can expect to receive Individual Education Plans home at the end of this week. Please read over your child’s IEP, sign and return it. A signed copy will be printed and returned to you. IEP’s outline what outcomes will be reported on at the end of the semester. They are not a representation of everything being taught at school.
The last assembly of the term will be held on Tuesday 4 April. This assembly will be hosted by our senior students. They are already beginning to think about their item, and will start to practise very soon. If you are free on Tuesday afternoon we would love to see you to support our senior students.
A reminder to purchase tickets for our P&C Easter raffle! We are also asking for donations for prizes, with the biggest prize being a 10 kilo block of Cadbury chocolate! You can purchase tickets online, see the attachment below.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Kaya,
My name is Mrs Sandra Bennett and I will be teaching your child HASS this year. This covers History, Geography, and Civics and Citizenship. I integrate these subjects with the cross curriculum priorities of Sustainability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures and Histories and Australia’s Engagement with Asia. This term we are doing History.
A little bit about my history. I have been in education for the past 24 years, having taught Mainstream, Special Needs and English as a Second Language. I live in Northam on 3 acres of rural land but choose to teach at Joondalup ESC I love to travel around the world and have had many adventures.
I have a wonderful husband, four grown up children, one step daughter and ten grandchildren. They certainly keep me busy. My little farm has a dog, cat, chickens and a calf we are hand rearing for a local farmer.
My real passion is Sustainability and I am the coordinator for the campus. You will see the Recycling Station sign at the end of my classroom on the oval. I also run the after school garden club and oversee all recycling and vegetable gardening activities. So, as you can see I get pretty busy.
The first few weeks have got off to a great start, with me getting to know all the new students. Last week I bought in my baby chicks and we had all our lessons outside. It was a fabulous week. Check out some of the photos! Baby chicks certainly bring out the smiles, cuddles and gentleness in your children.
Have a wonderful week
Sandra
This term we have had a dinosaur theme in Room 26. We started by reading “Dinosaurs in my School” by Timothy Knapman and Sarah Warburton.
We have created artworks of dinosaurs using a variety of techniques. The students stated their favourite dinosaur and why. We read a range of other texts and generated a word wall. Students had a lot of fun excavating dinosaurs from ice and making puppets.
Some students measured the length of the dinosaurs and compared it to the length of our classroom.
Room 16 has had an exciting start of the year. This year we have teamed up with Room 9 to run Minecraft Masters. Our builds have followed our fortnightly themes, with water being our theme in weeks 2 and 3, and plants, week 4 and 5. Our favourite build for our water theme was the water park, where our boys constructed an amazing park full of waterslides and pools. Our favourite build for plants were our future farms, where we had our first tie between Room 16 and Room 9! All of our students have been showing us their fantastic creativity and thinking critically in order to produce the best product.
Team work is major aspect of our learning in Yr 6, and our students have been completing team activities to practice skills such as turn taking, respectful communication and leadership. Our favourite activity has been our aluminium boats, where students had to create a boat from aluminium, and see how many counters it would carry. It was a fun activity and everyone worked fantastically well together.
Room 28 read The Little Red Hen
During our English sessions we have been learning the story ‘The Little Red Hen’ which follows the journey of the hen as she makes bread. Room 28 have been working very hard the past few weeks exploring how seeds grow into wheat and how flour made from the wheat is turned into bread. We wanted to help the Little Red Hen make and bake the bread, so we did! First, we got the ingredients ready. Next, we listened to and followed the instructions carefully. We had so much fun pretending to plant, water, cut and carry wheat the same as in the story and lastly, we got to knead, bake and eat our own bread. Kneading was a challenge, but we persevered! The best part was when we got to taste the bread. Yummy! We talked about how the Little Red Hen might have felt when her friends did not want to help her. We also talked about how we would feel if our friends did not want to help us at school. We have many more exciting experiences for the children to explore and engage with as we continue learning about the Little Red Hen this Term.
Students in Rooms 1, 2, and 3 have been developing artistic skills through experimentation with warm and cool colours to create artwork inspired by Drew Brophy.

More information about our groups
As well as running the Telethon Holiday Makers Program, we also run social groups throughout the school year. Using a strengths-based approach, we connect autistic young people with others and provide opportunities for social interaction, engagement and fun. Designed for specific age ranges, the social groups offer a regular program of events and activities for members. We provide a place where individuals from 10 years old to adults can come to have fun, develop new friendships and develop new skills, enabling them to begin to apply social skills in a natural environment. Participants are invited to make decisions on what they would like to do throughout the term, both individually and as a group. If participants have a plan or self-managed NDIS plan, they can use their funds to access our services, but we also have a limited number of subsidised rates for those without NDIS funding.
For more information about our services, please contact us via email, phone on 9431 2111 or visit our website here
Welcome back to 2023 and for all new families, welcome to our schools! Joondalup Schools P&C fundraises for both Joondalup Primary School and Joondalup Education Support Centre and every little bit of support is always much appreciated. If you think you could help in any way throughout the year in any capacity, please contact Jen Coyle on 0403 904 157 and we can add you to our WhatsApp volunteer group. No initial commitment – just putting your name into a pool when we make the call out for helpers for various fundraising activities. Many hands make light work and every cent raised goes back into our schools.
Entertainment Books are a fantastic fundraiser for Joondalup Schools P&C. For every membership we sell, 20% goes directly towards fundraising for our schools so if you are purchasing a membership – be sure to use the QR code here!
KEEP UP TO DATE ON FACEBOOK – Joondalup Schools P&C operate two different Facebook groups, and these are fantastic ways to keep connected with parents, buy and sell second hand uniforms and keep up to date with goings on at our schools. There is also a dedicated Canteen Facebook page called The Munch Box where you can keep on top of pop-up specials and new menu additions. If you are not a member of these yet – join today!

JOONDALUP SCHOOLS P&C WEBSITE – Another great way to keep abreast of key school dates and info is via our dedicated P&C website. Here you can sign up for email alerts to let you know when special events or days are coming up, and this is also where you can purchase things like Easter Raffle tickets and other ticketed fundraising events for our schools. https://joondalupschoolspandc.org.au
CANTEEN VOLUNTEER CALL OUT – Our Canteen is managed by the P&C and run on a daily basis by the amazing Nicole, who is also a parent from Joondalup Schools. We are extremely lucky to have a canteen which can operate five days per week, however this is only possible with the help of volunteers. We are always looking for more amazing volunteers for our school canteen! If you can spare some time, please message Nicole on The Munch Box page and she will add you to the group chat.
All Volunteers will receive a free lunch order for their child on their volunteer day. Great environment, lots of laughs! Our Canteen really appreciates the time given.Dear Parent,
The best gift any parent can give a child is the love of books and the joy and benefits of independent reading for fun. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school.
Our school participates in Scholastic Book Club and during the school year the Club catalogue will be advertised in the school newsletter, with all relevant links for ordering via LOOP. Please note that orders will only be accepted via LOOP.
You’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $2).
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Owning your own books is something special! I hope that you will encourage your child to order books this year. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our school, however there is never any obligation to order. I know of no better way to encourage reading than to allow children to choose the books they want to read.
