What a busy couple of weeks we have had at Joondalup Schools!
We celebrated Neurodiversity Day on Monday 15 March and our school was a sea of colour! Students and staff embraced the day and wore as many colours as they could, and learned more about learning difficulties and disabilities.
On Friday 19 March our schools celebrated both Harmony Day and Ride to School Day. A huge number of students arrived early to ride and scooter to school together, all dressed in orange. We rode around a track to encourage us to be active every day. As a campus we also celebrated our cultural diversity, inclusiveness and a sense of belonging.
Easter Hat Parade and Free Dress
On Tuesday 30 March students can come to school in free dress. Students are encouraged to wear an Easter hat or bonnet, as we will be having an Easter Hat parade. We will also draw out all the Easter raffle prizes during this parade. All students who have won prizes will be able to take their prizes home at the end of the day.
ANZAC Service
We will be holding an ANZAC service at school on Wednesday 21 April. The service will commence at 9:15am and will be held on the grassed area where our flag poles are. All family, friends and community members are encouraged to join us.
Leadership Camp
Next week our Year 6 School Captains will take part in a Leadership Camp with other school leaders from education support settings in the northern suburbs. It is an exciting time, and we are really looking forward to the exciting activities we have planned.
Tug of War
On Wednesday we had our campus Tug of War competition. Led by Mr. Lee, there was cheering, chanting and excitement as factions faced off against each other to win the title of Tug of War champion. Congratulations to the winning faction who won the most games on the day. The results will be announced at Faction Carnival Day in Term 3.
Interschool Sports Competition
On Monday Joondalup Schools are participating in the interschool athletics carnival for throws and jumps. Congratulations to Jake who will be representing Joondalup Education Support Centre with Joondalup Primary School on Monday.

We have enjoyed exploring numbers and solving simple problems in maths throughout the term.
Some of us have used rhymes, and matching objects and pictures to numbers and made counting sequences.
Others used Multi Attribute Blocks to show their understanding of place value when working with larger numbers and a Number Board to see the value of money to sequence coins. We are learning to order non sequential numbers and complete addition sentences using a balance scale to check our work. We enjoyed making our shape pictures.
Playing games is also helping us to be great listeners and speakers. These games are helping us learn about rhyming words and the pronouns we use when speaking and writing.
Harmony Day
We prepared for Harmony Day by working together to create our doves. Each person had their own colour, and we took turns to finger paint each dove.
We each made a flower symbol using orange which is the colour used when celebrating Harmony Day.
Music Rocks
We continue to explore our musical talents in our Music Rocks Lessons.
Term 1 has been very busy and enjoyable in Room 2. It is hard to believe that the holidays begin at the end of next week. We hope everyone has a safe and happy break.
We have recently had some changes to our Board members and we would like to introduce our new members to you. Please find a brief profile of our newly inaugerated members below.
This term Room 9 has been discussing how to stay safe in the sun. We have identified the clothing we need to wear and other things that protect us when we are out in the sun such as sunscreen, drinking plenty of water and staying in the shade where possible.
The students have completed a range of activities including identifying places around the school that offer shade at recess and lunch. The students also painted a picture of what they like to do in summer. We spoke about how they can protect themselves from the sun.
This term in Kindy we have been learning all about Australian animals. We loved reading Wombat Stew and mixing up an ooey, gooey, crunchy, munchy stew! We added feathers, mud, gumnuts and even bugs and grubs.
We also read an Aboriginal Dream Time story of Tiddalick the Frog, and how he drank all of the water in the billabong. The other animals then tried to make Tiddalick laugh to have the water back, but it didn’t work. Finally, eel’s silly dancing and tying himself up in knots made Tiddalick laugh and release the water, and he promised never to take the water again. After reading we talked about what we might do to make Tiddalick laugh, and then we made our own Tiddalick’s.
We have had a fantastic term together and can’t wait to learn even more next term!
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Room 14 have had an awesome start to the year. Everybody has settled into the class beautifully and we are all busy working towards our goals!
We have been reading books about animals this term. From ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, to ‘I Love Dogs’, we’ve loved doing craft, retelling the story, working with words and generally loving books!
On Fridays we go to the Sensory Room. The children love the ball pit and we have a turn on all the amazing experiences in both rooms.
Here are just a few photos from the term. You can all be so proud of yourselves room 14, Ms. Morrison, Mrs. Buckley, Mrs. Rowlands, Miss Zee.
Learning Through Stories with Room 25
Room 25 have been enjoying getting to know each other and the adults in their classroom since the start of term. We have learned to communicate about ourselves and what we like and do not like.
Students have made the most of the opportunities to choose their own rewards for their learning and independence, showing us what they enjoy; puppies, dolls, trucks, and balls seem to be the class favourites!
Stories have featured heavily in the classroom to help us explore, not only literacy but, history and maths too.
Little Rabbit Foo Foo by Micheal Rosen, as well as making us laugh, helped us learn about numbers, got our fingers exercising with playdough ‘goonies’ and inspired the making of our own wooden toys like children in the past often enjoyed.
The Three Little Pigs, The Gruffalo and Owl Babies got us all smiling, communicating with our devices, discussing with the PODD, drawings and writing, with Owl Babies causing lots of ‘aaaahhh’s too as we all joined in with ‘I want my mummy!’
Due to our growing campus our Kapture photos have been scheduled over 2 days. On Tuesday 27 April Rooms 33A, 2, 25 and 26 will have their photos taken and the remaining classes will be taken on Thursday 29 April.
If you have notrecieved any information home pelase speak with your classroom teacher.
During the second half of this term, we have continued to use our Yvette Theodoresen’s PODD Focus Sheets as a support to target specific areas of language in our PODD books. Over the last month we have looked at
Commenting and Expressing opinions
When commenting and expressing opinions we use the “I think it’s” branch starter in our PODD books. We use "I think it's" to teach students to comment and express an opinion in lots of situations across the day such as: Commenting on a book or activity, commenting on a funny movie or something that has happened in the classroom, comment on their artwork or an assembly item. Teaching "I think it's" has given our students the power and skills to comment on things that are happening around them. It's great to see personalities and a sense of humour shining through in our students where we may have previously missed it.
We quite often understand our students in our class when they have a problem, and we maybe just verbalise what we can see is wrong (EG. I can see you've fell over and cut your leg). By modelling this on the PODD book, it shows the students how they could express themselves when something is wrong and gives them the skills to tell someone across multiple settings with different people.
To make a request we use the “I want” branch starter in the PODD book. Using this branch starter we can model language in a number of situations throughout the day to ask to do different activities, to go outside or to make something.
If you have any queries regarding your child’s communication, please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher or I at any time.
I have taken on the fulltime position of Science and Sustainability specialist for 2021 for Joondalup Education Support Centre and continue my journey as Joondalup Schools Sustainability Coordinator. This has enabled me to implement a school wide campus focus on sustainable practices and teaching. Many classes have volunteered to be responsible for areas such as paper collection, worm farming, composting, up keeping the Grow Free Cart, vegetable garden and vertical garden.
Our 2 bin system is in full swing with students being taught what goes into each bin.
The campus participated in School Cleanup Day in February and we are pleased to say we collected 17 less bags of rubbish than last year. Remember we are all responsible for keeping our school looking fabulous.
This term has got off to a flying start with all ESC classes coming to me throughout the week. Our learning has been based around Biological sciences with links to Sustainable practices within our school. Take a look at some of the many activities we have been doing.
