Athletics Carnival
We had another successful Athletics Carnival on Friday thanks to the hard work of Mr Lee and the support of all staff. Although the weather was cool, the rain stayed away, and the students had a wonderful time. Thank you to those parents who were able to make it and cheer on their child as they participated in their running races and team games. Carnivals can be a daunting experience for some of our students but as there are practise runs for many weeks in the lead up, our students are prepared for the events they are placed in. The feedback from the carnival was overwhelming positive so congratulations to all involved. Each year the Education Support Network (ESNN) hold a carnival specifically for education support students but due to COVID, this is not going ahead this year. We are hopeful it will be back on in 2023!
IEPs
Your child’s IEP has been finalised, following your parent/teacher meeting, a copy has been sent to you. Please sign this and return it to your classroom teacher for our records. IEPs are working documents so adjustments and refinements can be made throughout the semester as your child continues to demonstrate progress.
Triple P Morning Tea
Our last morning tea was held on Friday 26 August. We had a presentation by guest speaker, Brendan Everett about Stepping Stones Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), with an emphasis on parenting children with disabilities of all ages. We had a wonderful turnout by parents and interest in JESC hosting a couple of sessions. Brendan Everett is a registered School Psychologist with a background in education support and supporting positive behaviour in young people.
At the meeting, we were able to get some feedback as to what sessions would be beneficial and the following were identified as the top preferences:
- Changing Problem Behaviour to Positive Behaviour (Friday 4 Oct, 9am)
- Fears and Anxiety (Friday 2 Dec, 9am)
If you would like to register your interest in attending these sessions, please email Kirsty.harris@education.wa.edu.au
Kindergarten 2023
Kindergarten enrolments are open for 2023 and enrolment packs are available in the office. If you are planning to enrol your child into Kindy at Joondalup ESC for 2023, please complete and return your request to enrol form as soon as possible.
Planning has commenced for 2023, with input from class staff. We begin this comprehensive process early so that we have time to consider all options and best placement for students. Class placement is determined by a number of factors, including behavioural and medical needs, independence, social and emotional needs and dynamics within the classroom. We put a great deal of thought into planning class structures, but it is not always possible to meet each request or expectation. Should you have a very specific request, please make a time to speak with a member of the Administration team.
In exciting news from the Joondalup Schools P&C, we have a date for the next Disco! This will go ahead on Friday 28 October. The Disco committee has organised a Sensory session to occur, between the K-2 and 3-6 sessions. The cost will be half of the usual rate and parents will be required to stay onsite during this session. I would also like to mention the P&C who work tirelessly to give their time and energy on a very regular basis to support our students. Many hands make light work so if you are able to volunteer, please let us know so we can pass on your details. Many thanks to the Disco committee for their work to create this event, it will be a fantastic night! Stay tuned for further updates!
Father's Day Stall
Thank you to the P&C Association for their wonderful Father’s Day stall. As expected, nearly everything sold out.
Education Assistants Appreciation Week
Last week we recognised the work of education assistants with chocolates. Our education assistants play a significant role in the education of students across all classes. Thank you for the vital work you do with your students and colleagues.
Abilities Expo
We are delighted to have a group of students performing at the upcoming Abilities Expo at Crown on Thursday 8 September at approximately 11.00am. The expo is free to attend so if you are thinking about heading down, please show our students your support. I would like to recognise Ruth Galt for organising rehearsals and preparing our students for this wonderful opportunity.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
What a wonderful week of stories, activities and dressing up.
We think that this year’s dress up efforts were some of the best. Please enjoy some photo's taken at our dress up day parade.
Room 9 start the transition to High School
Room 9 have had an exciting Term 3.
We have spent lots of time practicing for the faction carnival and we think our throwing and catching skills are certainly improving! Everyone participated in the Tug of War and the throws and jumps ahead of the carnival. We are sure they have all had a fabulous time during the carnival.
Transition visits have started and our first visit went smoothly. The students were very nervous but excited and had lots of questions about what the high school might look like and be on offer. After our first visit, lots of these questions were answered and they were super impressed with the canteen and it's menu, the library and its range of books and the beautiful gardens including quiet spaces, swinging chairs and recycled art pieces in and around the garden spaces.
We are preparing for camp at the end of this term. Each Wednesday, we have been cooking and preparing different snacks and treats to take with us for our morning and afternoon tea. We have taste-tested our creations and have enjoyed making vegetable muffins, bacon & vegetable slice, chocolate and choc chip muffins, Milo slice and Anzac biscuits. The Year 6s have come up with all of the recipe ideas and put forward suggestions for dinner on our first night. The vote landed on spaghetti bolognaise and we have trialed a recipe that everyone loved!!
On top of all of this, we continue to have fun while learning! Our Maths focus is on our number skills but also measurement and shape. In Literacy we are continuing to work on how to improve our sentences and make them really interesting, and reading a range of texts. Our class is working on showing kindness with the goal of earning 100 kindness hearts by the end of the term. They are showing kindness by helping others, checking in on someone when they are upset or on their own, including and inviting someone to join in with their group. We are so proud of how kind and caring Room 9 students are.
Room 16 learn Medieval History
Students of Room 16 have been exploring a range of topics this term, such as Medieval history, the Commonwealth Games, Cinema and AFL. They particularly enjoyed creating catapults in Medieval history and testing how far the machines could throw classroom objects such as dice, erasers and Maltesers.
We always enjoy watching events such as the Commonwealth Games, and were delighted to have Room 9 join us, to cheer on the Aussies in the swimming. It was great to see the Aussies perform exceptionally well and can’t wait for the next games in four years time.
Term 3 is the start of the busy period for Room 16. With activities such as Faction Carnival, Abilities Expo, Senior Assembly, Year 6 Transition and Year 6 camp, it is proving to be a whirlwind of a term. Everyone in our room tried their very best in the Faction Carnival and we had a blast of a day. Thank you to Mr Lee for organising the event, and well done to Gold faction. This week four of our boys will be heading to Crown to complete a drumming performance for the Ability Expo. They have been practising every Friday with students from numerous rooms and can’t wait to show off their skills. In addition to this, a couple of our Year 6’s have travelled to Belridge Secondary College ESC last week to complete their first of four transition days. They had a blast seeing their new school and rekindling with their old friends from last year. Lastly our Year 6’s are very excited for their camp in week 10. They have been preparing with the students of Room 9, looking at ideas for breakfast and dinner, while sitting in on meetings discussing what to expect on camp. It’s going to be an absolute blast of a camp this year, and we are all counting down the days until week 10.
Room 26 Grow Fruit and Vegetables
At the end of last semester, we planted a range of fruit, vegetables and herbs in our garden beds. These included broccoli, broccolini, carrots, parsley and strawberries.
We have had a lot of fun checking on our beds each week. We were very excited when we were able to pick some broccoli, broccolini and silver beet. We were able to make some silver beet and ricotta pies and some broccoli quiches. Most of the students loved these.
We have also cooked a beef and broccoli stir fry. This was also very good. We are excitedly waiting for our carrots to grow so that we can cook again.
Thursday 8 September is R U OK? Day. This is a National Day of Action when we remind Australians that everyday is a day to look out for how others around you might be feeling and start a meaningful conversation about how we can support them. Joondalup Schools will be doing activities for both staff and students to be involved in. All activities will be age appropriate and non-compulsory.
R U OK? has released resources, tips and ideas to help you drive genuine change in your workplace, school and community.
Thanks for supporting R U OK? and the people in your world. Please visit A conversation could change a life | R U OK? for further information.

Abstract
The students in Room 22 worked with primary colours and line to create this abstract.
Mrs Sweet
To our wonderful Joondalup musicians and families,
We are so pleased to announce that our Term 3 Concert will be held at Perth’s musician’s venue, created by W.A. musicians, run by W.A. musicians for W.A. musicians. Music Rocks Convenients will see our musicians perform on a new stage once again, with entry via the Convenients Store fridge door to enter the band room. Their motto is “come find us for live music behind the fridge door”. There are a couple of alfresco areas to enjoy and whilst the stage is quite small, it is becoming quite a famous one. Convenients is in the heart of Northbridge directly adjacent to the famous Northbridge Piazza. This is going to be huge!
This event is especially designed for our Joondalup families and musicians.
Please find nomination letter attached with full details. Each participating student receives a complimentary ticket with a returned slip to rehearsals, making sure no one is counted out. Tickets are also available from Oztix for more family and friends to come along.
