Kaya!
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the annual Faction Cross Country event held last Friday. This was another successful event coordinated by Rob Lee after many days and weeks of organisation, well done Mr Lee! Thank you to all spectators for observing the current physical distancing and mask wearing requirements, while cheering on the students.
Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
Thank you to all families for taking the time to discuss these with your child’s teacher. These conversations are very important and underpin the foundation of your child’s day to day learning. We value parents as partners in delivering a rich and meaningful education to your child and appreciate your contribution. IEPs are now in the process of being finalised and will be sent home for signing.
Please sign and return your child’s IEP to your classroom teacher.
Ride to School and Harmony Day Celebrations
A fantastic day is planned for Friday 25 March 2022. The below information will help your child to plan and decorate their wheels for the big display on the oval. Don’t forget to wear something orange as this is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
From 8:00am–8:30am there will be a staff member at nominated school gates (see map attached) and students will receive:
- a raffle ticket if they walked/wheeled their way to school
- an additional raffle ticket for decorating their wheels
Hold on to your raffle tickets as these will go to your classroom teacher and will go in to a Ride2School prize draw.
Students with wheels will be guided to a secured area on the oval where all bikes/scooters will be kept together in classroom groups for the day. Students are to take their own helmets back to their classroom (please label your child’s bike helmet and wheels for identification).
Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live. An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.
COVID-19
I have been advised that a hotline has been established for parent/carers of students with high/complex support needs. If you have queries or concerns, please contact WA Health on 1300 316 555. You will need to describe your situation so they can fast track support services.
It is understandable that with the many changes to isolation and testing protocols, there can be some confusion. Below is a summary of the current directions provided to us by the Department of Education:
- Anybody who tests positive for COVID-19 must isolate 7 days from the time of when the test is taken and may return to work/school after this, provided they no longer have any symptoms. No further testing required.
- If a student lives in a household with a person who has tested positive, they have to isolate for 7 days and cannot return to school any earlier and need to follow the required testing protocols.
- If a staff member lives in a household with a person who has tested positive, they may be deemed a critical worker in consultation with the principal and could have the option to return to work instead of isolating but takes daily RATs. They must still isolate when not at work.
- If a student is deemed a close contact but are not a household contact, they may return to school if they test negative on day 1 and remain asymptomatic. They test again on day 6 (PCR) or Day 7 (RAT). They must isolate when not at school. The 7 days commences from the last time they had contact with the positive COVID-19 case.
APRIL FOOLISHNESS DAY
Friday 1 April is April Fool’s Day so it’s a perfect day to be a bit foolish. More details will come from the School Captains so watch this space.

Anna Eason

March 18, 2022. A date which will live in infamy. The Joondalup Schools held its annual Cross Country Carnival. “We’re going to run across the whole country!” exclaimed some students at the beginning of Cross-Country training. Sometimes it sure feels like it.
Students can now catch their breath and breathe a sigh of relief. Well done to the jogger-nauts who represented their factions and achieved their personal best. That’s what it’s all about. You all did extremely well to memorise the course over four weeks.
We started with the Year 6’s and worked our way down to the Year 3’s. Their courses were at Windermere Oval and each runner put their heart and soul into finishing the event. This year we moved the Year 2’s to Pre-Primary students to the Joondalup Schools Oval, the Colosseum of the Joondalup community. These students were in an uphill battle with the nature play area, then came down to the oval where they stayed on pace to finish the race.
Thank you to all the parents and carers that came down to support the students. It is always fantastic to have a great bunch of people around to create a positive atmosphere for the students to compete in.
A special mention to all the staff involved on the day plus Miss O’Connor and Mr Easther for leading an army of students and the Faction Captains in setting up for the event.
If you would like to compete in more cross country carnivals, please contact the Joondalup Little Athletics Centre on 0424 068 141, via e-mail admin@jlac.org.au or by visiting their website at http://www.jlac.org.au/.
Congratulations to our winners in each event.

Room 26 read Aliens Love Underpants
As part of our literacy program this term we have spent two weeks reading the book, Aliens Love Underpants and completing activities.
We discussed aliens and some character traits. The students were able to generate some adjectives to describe aliens using PODD, devices and verbally. We completed a craft activity and the students wrote about what they would do if they met an alien.
Room 14 have had a wonderful start to the year. We’ve had a transport theme and have read some great books such as ‘The 100 Decker Bus’, ‘The Way Back Home’ and made rockets and hot air balloons, to name a few, for our display. Our boys are all enthusiastic learners and we are looking forward to our theme for next term, Aboriginal Studies, where we’ll be reading some fantastic new books such as ‘Ernie Dances to The Didgeridoo’, by Alison Lester and ‘I Love Me’, by Sally Morgan.
We have been practising our social skills and self-care in Health as well as hygiene. We have a classroom full of enthusiastic teeth brushers and some gentle souls when bathing our doll, Charlie. Our history classes have involved learning about a significant person, so the boys did an interview with their mums and we are compiling the results into a book.
Maths is a busy time in our class and we are learning some new, big concepts. Counting out bears, recognising numbers, place, value and time are just a few of the things we’ve been investigating this term.
Catch up with us again soon for more news,
Vicky Morrison, Leanne Dior and Ailsa Legge
Room 9 learnt about themselves and their classmates
Our year 6's in Room 9 have made an amazing start to the school year. Everyone is showing genuine kindness, understanding and support for each other. They have shared information about themselves, including what they love to do, eat and play and what makes them happy. After putting together an ‘All About Me’ puzzle, the class carried out a little investigation and asked questions of each other to learn more about their classmates.
We have been exploring stories about space and carrying out some fun activities, mainly about how things travel in the air. We have made paper airplanes and parachutes with balloons to see if they will fly. Luckily it was a nice, windy day for our experiment and when we dropped them from the yellow climbing frame, the wind carried our parachutes quite far!
The students have been learning about feelings and emotions as part of the Zones of Regulation. They use a feelings thermometer to check in during the day and indicate how they are going. We will continue to learn about how to manage our emotions and how we can respond in stressful, worrying or frustrating situations.
In HASS, students have been learning about the importance of voting and being able to have their say. They have made voting boxes and practiced voting on things like their favourite colours and favourite sensory toys. We incorporated some maths concepts like tallies and graphs to record some of our information.
A huge congratulations to our first certificate winner of the year, Lily for her cheery and helpful nature in room 9. She is willing to give things a go and is building her independence skills. Way to go Lily!

The Endurance
After a 107 years, the ship, Endurance was found 3008 metres below sea level. Ernest Shackleton was exploring the Antarctic when it sank. The Endurance looks very much the same as the day it sank. The students in rooms 27 and 25 drew the ship from direct instruction and then outlined it an felt pen and added colour with pastels.
Chickens
Mrs Bennet has brought chickens to campus. The students have observed and cared for them in sustainability and science. We talked about their texture. The students in rooms 2 and 21 worked with soft pastels to draw three chickens. They used short lines to imply the soft fluffy texture of the chickens.
To follow up on our last newsletter, please see some photo's of the students artwork on display at the hArt exhibition at Hillarys Boat Harbour.
Artwork is on display from Friday 11 March until Saturday 2 April.
