School Review
As an Independent Public School we engage in school reviews. This is where a Director from the department and a peer Principal meet with the school (staff, school board etc.) and work through school documents and information to validate our school self-review process. Our school will be having our review on Tuesday 20 October.
Business Plan
Our Business Plan will be finalised by the school board over the next week. After it has been signed and endorsed by the School Board it will be published. All families will receive a copy and it will be posted to our website and schools online department website. Our Business Plan is for the next three years and outlines our school priorities and how we will achieve our set academic and non-academic targets.
Yarning Circle
Our yarning circle has started being created! Students across the campus have created designs which have been given to our artist who used these as inspiration when creating the design for the yearning circle and the seating. A concrete pad will be poured this weekend in preparation for the artwork. When complete, the yarning circle will be used as collaborative way to communicate and encourage responsible, respectful and honest interactions.
Wellness Day – Friday 4 September
Next Friday the campus will celebrate Wellness Day together. This is a day when health and wellbeing activities will be run campus wide and students work together in groups for the day. Students from our school will be working together with peers in the primary school. Students are encouraged to dress up representing an emotion. Students can dress in colours that reflect the way they are feeling.
Pre-Primary Students 2021
A reminder for families who have children who are pre-primary age next year that you must re-enrol for 2021. Enrolment forms have been sent home to families. Please return them at your earliest convenience.
Attendance Letters
Earlier this term some families received attendance letters which indicated that your child’s attendance was under the average student attendance. I wish to apologise for some of the confusion felt by families when this was sent out.
The attendance data indicated in the letter was only inclusive of term three attendance. The attendance did not include absences from school because of therapy. The data did however include absences due to a student being sick, or for medical appointments etc. We completely understand that students who are away from school because they are unwell, or have unavoidable appointments have valid reasons for not being at school. The intention of the letter was for families’ information, and not intended to cause confusion or distress.
Parents we need your feedback!
ASEPA (Australian Special Education Principals Association) have teamed together with the Australian Catholic University to create a survey for families of students who are attending education support facilities. There has never been a survey like this done before and as parents of children with disabilities it is an opportunity to give some feedback on how you feel about education support centres and special schools.
We need your help to give your feedback about how satisfied you are with specialist schools in Australia. This is a national survey, and all responses are anonymous. The link can be found below.

We have seen some fantastic work come up to the office. Students are so proud of their work and we love to see and hear about it.
Joondalup Education Support Centre have created our very own Reconciliation Action Plan, which has been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia. A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a formal statement of our commitment to reconciliation. The Joondalup ESC RAP was developed using the Narragunnawali platform to formalise existing initiatives and to identify more actions that will enrich our journey to support reconciliation at Joondalup ESC. If you would like to contribute your knowledge and expertise, to assist JESC in delivering the actions in our RAP, we look forward to hearing from you.
This term we have been learning all out Minibeasts. First we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and talked about the changes a caterpillar goes through. We then made a lifecycle showing the growth from an egg, to a caterpillar and into a chrysalis.
Next we read The Bad Tempered Ladybird, and talked about what makes us angry and how to be kind. We made some grumpy faced ladybirds by cutting, gluing and writing.
Then we read The Very Busy Spider. We weaved spider webs and made hand print spiders to match. We talked about what it means to be busy, and wrote and drew pictures of ourselves being busy.
During this term we even looked after our very own caterpillar and fed him lots of healthy vegetables, before letting him loose into the garden.
It has been an exciting, bug filled term!
Over the last month we have started to send out information on the Key Word Signs and Auslan signs that we are using at school. This fortnight’s focus is to use the signs:
“I,” “want,” “eat” and “drink.”
These signs can also be used several times during the day both at school and at home.
For example:
- During mealtimes, morning or afternoon tea
- You could set up a little tea party or picnic and ask your child to request food/drink.
- Playing with dolls or teddy’s- the toys could be eating and your child could comment that they want to eat or drink
Please remember to speak to your classroom teacher if your child signs differ from the ones we are teaching so we can adjust for your child.
If you have any questions regarding your child’s communication, please contact your classroom teacher or an AAC Co-ordinator.
If you have any questions regarding your child’s communication please contact your classroom teacher or an AAC Co-ordinator.

The students in Room 21 proved how brave they have all become when participating in the awesome Spineless Wonders incursion this week!
We’ve also been super lucky to begin Visual Arts lessons this term with Mrs Sweet. We love the hands on art that we have been making, based around an Ocean theme.
Room 21 have continued to enjoy having a book focus throughout each week which they have used to work on their sentence construction, guided writing and learning about book concepts. They continue to enjoy finishing the week off with sensory play based around the books.
Health and Wellness Day is on Friday 4th September. Everyone at Joondalup Schools will get to participate in a range of activities that focus around 'Everyday Emotions'. This will give students the opportunity to identify emotions and develop strategies to help everyone deal with them. Students are still encouraged to wear their Faction colours on this day and please make sure they bring their labelled hats and a labelled water bottle as there will be a lot of moving around.
We are also still on the hunt for medium to large cardboard boxes and newspapers in good condition. This will assist in the running of our box building and costume sessions.
Families and students are encouraged to walk or ride to school on this day as this can assist in enhancing emotional well-being.
This term Room 25 have been learning about Community Safety. We have visited the School Dentist and last week we had the Joondalup Fire Fighters come and visit us.
We learnt about fire safety and got to have a turn using the hose. Next week we will have a GP visiting us!
Our Playground Committee recently applied for and was successful in obtaining a grant through Local Schools Community Fund. The goal of the grant was to improve accessability for all students to particpate in outdoor play. We have had numerous new pieces of equipment installed in both our junior and senior play areas with completion to be in the near future.
We have also had the boat that was kindly donated to our school, installed in the Kindy playground. Students are enjoying sailing the high seas.

It has been fantastic to see students return this term with such a positive attitude for learning. We are continuing to participate in our Minecraft Master’s program and learning important team skills such as leadership, communication and cooperation.
Our Year 6 classmates have been attending Belridge Secondary College, as we are transitioning to High School. Students have enjoyed meeting students from other schools who will be with them next year.
The After School Garden Club is up and running, with many activities already undertaken. We have weeded the beds, filled them with soil and planted seeds. Over the next few weeks we will nurture these seeds in our wonderful glasshouse and then plant them out. We have also begun to plant our vertical gardens with succulents. Take a look near the office. The students and parents loved picking herbs and making herb scones in the frypan. The verdict was, “Delicious”.
Fill in the attached form and send to your class teacher for one of the 20 spots available. Kindy and Pre Primary children will need an adult to attend with them. The club will run from week 2 to and finish in week 9.
It is great to see classes out and about in the garden during lessons. The garden is a great space to learn in.

Happy gardening and recycling,

Tip 1
Check that you have a water bottle with when you go on a walk. Keep hydrated.
Tip 2
It’s time to plant all your Summer vegetables so they have a good root system during the Summer months and don’t need as much watering.
This year the theme for science week is Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans.
Fish
After viewing creatures that live in the ocean the students in Rooms 2, 3, 21 and 28 created these great fish. Some students drew their own fish others worked with fish already cut out. They painted the fish in acrylic paint and then added patterns using stickers. They look terrific hanging in front of the ocean waves created earlier in the term.
Jellyfish
The students in Room 27 created jellyfish swimming in the ocean. They drew stencils for the bodies, lightly stuck these on with sticky tape and added tentacles with white wax crayon. The page was then sprayed with dye to create cool colours. After removing the jellyfish bodies the students worked with soft pastel and the element of value to colour the jellyfish in warm colours.

Students have been practising their skills for the Faction Carnival and we are getting excited for the big day.
The Faction Athletics Carnival is on Friday 11 September 2020. In the coming weeks information will be sent to all families so that you can plan your day.
Under Phase 4 restrictions for COVID-19 we welcome parents to attend events, subject to each family social distancing and following hygiene guidelines correctly. Families are able to sit together but must be 1.5 metres from other adults.
We have put some parameters in place to support the wellbeing of students, staff and families. On the day of the carnival the following will happen:
- There will be one large designated viewing area for families which is the open space by the basketball court. You will need to access the area by using the gates that come of Jolstra Crescent.
- Families will use the toilets by the staffroom in S and J Blocks. Students will use the toilets in the classroom blocks. For families, if the cubicles are being used, please wait outside until they are free.
- Parents will not be permitted to go to the student bays or the podium area. So that each moment is captured we will have a dedicated person in charge of photos and will send them to parents as soon as practicable after the event.
- There will be a supply of hand sanitiser and soap in toilets which will be topped up throughout the day.
- Please respect the rights of school staff to determine what happens on the school site and follow these expectations politely.
- During recess and lunch families need to remain in their designated area and students will eat on the oval.
- At the end of the carnival, and if it is prior to 3.00pm, all students will return to their class and parents can sign their own children out by letting the teacher know they are taking the children. You do not need to come to the office and sign them out. You also can’t take other children from the class; only take your own.
- The canteen will operate out of the staffroom and on J Block verandah so you will be able to buy coffee, tea, sausage sizzle and cakes. Sausage sizzles will be available for children to pre-order.
With your help we can make this a great event for students, staff and the wider community.
Due to COVID-19, the canteen shifted to a cashless payment system. This has proved to be a much more efficient way of doing things, enabling our team to focus on what we do best - by providing quality & nutritious food to the JPS community.
Cash will still however be accepted in a limited capacity by:
- Pre-ordering meals for recess & lunch at the canteen before 8:50am
- Counter sales of ice creams after the lunch siren goes.
The canteens preferred way of ordering is via online through Quickcliq or with a canteen account.
Up and Coming Events
Friday 4 September is Health and Wellness Day - a pre orderd lunch will be available on this day with a special Emotions Recess as well.
No other lunch orders can be taken on this day. More details will be sent home soon.
Birthday cupcakes are still available to be ordered through Quickcliq or alternatively give us a call 9233 5818.
Thank you
Carolyn
