Parent Morning Tea
Last Friday a number of families from our school got together to meet each other, share stories and ask questions about all sorts of things to do with Primary School, High School and everything in between. It was a great opportunity to sit together have a cuppa and relax. Families agreed Friday mornings were a good time. Please save the date for our next morning tea, which will be held on Friday 3rd of May at 9:00am. This is week one of Term two. We will meet in J Block – similar to last time, everyone is welcome.
Clean up our School AfternoonLast week the campus got together for a Clean Up Our Schools afternoon. Together we picked up rubbish, told teachers about things that were unsafe around our campus and cleaned up our school. Many hands make light work and it didn’t take long before our school looked beautiful, tidy and safe.
Open Night
Open night was held last week. I would like to thank all the families who came to the evening, many who had meetings with teachers. There was a sausage sizzle on the night, and all funds raised from this evening are going towards purchasing new choir stands for our school choir. Families received raffle tickets for coming to the night and two students have been drawn out of the raffle box. Congratulations to Luke Room 7 and Agok from Room 12 who have each won a $25.00 canteen voucher.
Sensorium
Over the next few weeks our junior students will be engaging with the team from Sensorium for a session on Thursdays. Sensorium come out to our school each year, however this year they have a new format, which is specifically for junior students. These incursions are free for families, as we feel it is really important our students have the opportunity to experience literacy through the Arts. Stay tuned for photos from these amazing sessions.
Ride to School and Harmony Day
Today we are celebrating Ride to School Day and Harmony Day. Staff and students walked, rode, and scootered to school. Some students, families and staff met at different points around our community and walked to school together.
We also wore orange today to represent our support for Harmony Week. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Down Syndrome Day
Next Thursday our campus will be celebrating Down Syndrome Day by wearing crazy socks for the day. Everyone is encouraged to come in different socks on Thursday 21st of March. Join in with us to create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome on 21 March. Each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. Student councillors will collect a gold coin donation for those who would like to contribute to the Down Syndrome Association of Western Australia.
Faction Week
Next week we are in full faction mode! Jumps, Throws and Tug of War will happen on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, before our big faction carnival on the Friday. A letter regarding the carnival has gone home to families. Please make sure you read the letter. There is a slight change in format and we will be eating recess over at Windemere Oval this year. Please make sure you have packed your child’s recess in a named disposable bag so it can be taken over to the oval. Lunch will be held at school as usual.
Natalie Hatton
As you may or may not be aware, the school is still growing at a considerable rate. To keep class sizes at our preferred size the Education Support Centre has purchased two new demountable classrooms.
The first of these are scheduled to arrive next week Wednesday 20 March 2019. There will be some small inconveniences and disruptions during the installation period. We foresee the carpark closest to Kindy classes to be inaccessible during the installation period due to the cranes, temporary fencing and groundworks that will be taking place on Monday 18th of March. A small part of the playground/grass area will also be inaccessible.
As more information comes to hand we will keep the community informed via the school app.
We thank you for your patience and understanding.
We have seen some fantastic work come up to the office. We love seeing students so proud of the work they have done.
We are having an amazing time in room 3, getting to know our new friends and our new teachers.
This term we have been having lots of fun with a Fairytales theme.
We have read the stories: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Gingerbread man.
Our favorite activity so far was getting to make a salt dough gingerbread man. We had to design our gingerbread man on paper first and then we could make it.
We are creating a fairytale wall with all of our work, it is filling up fast!
A focus in Room 26 this term has been to nurture and build the social relationships between our friends during class time activities and during play.
As part of our Health curriculum, we are exploring different items that go into the new 3 Bin Waste Guide at Joondalup as we care for the environment.
This term we have been exploring what activities we enjoy.

As part of our History program we have been discussing the first people to live in Australia.
The Indigenous people of Australia use many forms of communication to pass on their knowledge and for social interaction.
For Aboriginal people, language has a close connection to The Dreaming and spirituality, as well as to the land and social beliefs.
The book “How the Birds got their Colours” is based on a story told by Mary Albert of the Bardi people to Aboriginal children living in Broome, Western Australia.
The After School Garden Club is in full swing with up to 50 students and their families attending on Wednesday between 3-4pm. We have pulled up spent crops, prepared the soil and planted for our Pizza Garden. This progam has been so popular that at moment we can take no more students.
Our pumpkins have been harvested and we made pumpkin scones. This was a huge hit with everyone. Who knew pumpkin could taste so good!

I am pleased to announce that we now have a Grow Free Cart that is set up near the office. The cart has been painted by the staff from Room 21 and Room 21 students will become the custodians of the cart.
"How does the cart work?" We have a simple answer: you give what you can, and take what you need. There are no prices, no bartering, no trading, no value. Like you would with family and loved ones.
What can I put on the cart?
Homegrown or homemade produce: fruit, veg, herbs, preserves, eggs, etc. Preferably grown with organic principles, without toxins. Grown with love is a strict prerequisite! Seeds, seedlings, cuttings and rootstock (Please label all, and heirloom seeds are best, as they can be saved from) All things gardening, whether it be gardening magazines, planters, worm tea, jars , paper bags and small boxes for seeds or produce.
Our Schools Cleanup Day was on Thursday 28th of February and the campus worked together to make our school litter free so we can all be very proud of it. We picked up 32 bags of litter as opposed to last year’s total of 81. So our school is much cleaner this year. We all celebrated with an icy pole and of course placed our rubbish in the bin.
Happy gardening and recycling,
Sandra & Stacey – Sustainability Coordinators
Say No to Bullying National Day
Friday 15th of March is National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Bullying can occur when we don't understand that we are all unique individuals and we have differences that should be respected and valued.
It's important when your child tells you about bullying that you remain calm and supportive. Find out as much information as you can about what happened. A good understanding of what happened can help you communicate with us about the situation.
When we all work together, students, families and school we can provide a positive and safe environment.
We asked our Year 6 class what bullying looks like to them and these are their responses:
Term 1 2019
18th - 20th March | Faction Events - Jumps, Throws and Tug-O-War |
22nd March | Faction Carnival |
3rd April | Colour Run |
12th April | Last Day of Term for Students |
Any dates highlighted in red have been changed since the last publication.
It is important to remember that the dates will be correct at the time of publication and that the calendar on the school app or website will always be the most up to date.
Last month Danielle Price and I were fortunate enough to attend a Professional Development Day on PODD for speech generating devices. Supporting our students at school using PODD is one of our priorities and this was an amazing opportunity to hear about PODD for speech generating devices directly from the developer of PODD, Gayle Porter.
Gayle spoke about the different levels available to users and the progression that can be made as skills develop. She discussed ways to use the PODD in the classroom in an academic and social environment. We got to practice editing and programming and experimented with creating story specific displays that could be used to support literacy.
Gayle discussed the importance of ensuring the communication device is available at all times.
The long term aim is for autonomous communication is being able to say what I want to say, to whoever I want to say it to, whenever I want to say it, however I want to say it.
If you have any queries regarding your child’s communication, please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher, Kerry Read or I at any time.
Yours in Communication
Suzanne Norman
AAC Coordinator
