Kaya families
Welcome to Semester 2. Hopefully families met with classroom teachers to discuss reports and upcoming IEP’s. Families should be receiving IEP’s in Week 5 this term.
Swimming Lessons
You may be aware that HBF arena are currently undergoing significant works to the swimming pools. Unfortunately, this will impact our swimming lessons. We do not want our students to miss out, so we have organised for swimming to happen at Craigie Leisure Centre this year. Swimming lessons have now been scheduled for weeks 1 & 2 in Term 4 at Craigie Leisure Centre. We will have afternoon lessons, and more information will come out later in the term about the logistics to ensure that we are able to get back to school by the end of the school day. Families (PP – Year 6) should have already received permission notes about swimming next term.
Sensorium
This year Sensorium is visiting us! Sensorium create custom made sensory theatre experiences which explore all the senses. They will be performing with our upper primary students each week for 4 weeks starting on Friday 4 August. We are really excited for their new story “10 Tiny Things.” Last year they performed “Big Rain Coming”.
Interschool Sport Carnivals
This year there will be two interschool sport carnivals, a junior and a senior carnival. The senior carnival will be held on Tuesday 5 September at Beldon Education Support Centre and the junior carnival will be held on Thursday 7 September at Creaney Education Support Centre. You will be receiving more information about the carnival next week when permission notes are sent home.
Book Week
We will be celebrating Book Week in Week 6 this term. There will be a fun assembly, a dress up day and activities throughout the week. You can start to think about your favourite character from a story to dress up as when the day arrives!
Parent Survey
Thank you to those who completed the parent survey. Results will be presented at our next Board meeting and be used to help us plan on how we can improve on areas as a school.
Family / teacher IEP meetings
Many families met with teachers during our staff development day on the first day of this term. We are after some feedback from families to see if you liked this or not, so we plan if this is something we do next year. Please let us know what you think about holding IEP meetings on the first day of Term 3.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Room 22 get ready for Book Week
Hello from Room 22! We have had a nice mid-year break and are so excited to be back at school for Term 3. There are lots of exciting events happening this term. We have been busy practising for the athletics carnival and are most excited for Book week.
Here, we are pictured reading some of our favourite books. Our favourites throughout the year have been The Hungry Caterpillar, Pete the Cat and his white shoes, Brown Bear Brown Bear, and Hippo has a Hat. We look forward to seeing all the book week costumes in Week 6!
This term in STEM is physics with new topics including, STEM Stories, Balance, Gravity, Static and Natural Disasters.
Pre-Primary and Year 1 in Rooms 14, 23, 28, 29 and 35 are looking at STEM stories. We have started off with ‘The Three Little Pigs’ building our pigs and their houses.
Years 1, 2 and 3 in Rooms 21, 22, 25, 26 and 27 are looking a balance and how objects can balance on top of each other, through crafts and simple structures.
Years 4 and 5 in Rooms 1, 2 and 3 will be completing a unit about static energy and gravity. Focusing on how static electricity is created and exploring how gravity works.
Year 6 classes in Rooms 9 and 16 are looking at Natural Disasters, how these are formed and how buildings and infrastructure are design to cope with these weather events.
Room 14 have had a busy start to Term 3. In Talk for Writing, we have been learning about Going on a Bear Hunt! We used ooblek for mud, water and shaving foam for snow and have been learning all the actions. We will be having a bear hunt around the school next week so watch out for bears, everybody!
We have also had some piranhas in the classroom while reading Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas and we designed our perfect fruit salad then made fruit kebabs, yum!
Throw in some painting and music and it’s been a whirlwind start to the term.
Room 1 explore Emperor Penguins
Room 1 has had a busy start to Term 3!
In the first week the students completed a presentation about what they did during the school holidays. We got to see lots of great photos and heard lots of exciting stories! After their presentation, students printed out their pictures and made a poster to hang on our classroom Wow Wall, which summarizes all the fun things they got up to.
We have also begun exploring our new information text, “Emperor Penguins”, for Talk for Writing. As our hook activity, we completed a variety of ice and water activities along with Rooms 2 and 3. There were four different stations which included an ice-breaking challenge, a penguin race, shaving foam craft and ice-painting. It was great to see everyone working together at each of the stations. Students are now in the process of innovating the text and developing their own information report on an animal of their choice.
The students in Year 5 and Year 6 will be involved in a cyber-safety information session called ThinkUKnow. The session is run by the Australian Federal Police and has been structured to educate and promote online safety as well as to develop digital literacy skills in order to address the growing concerns around cyber safety. Knowing what young people SEE, SAY and DO online underpins the ThinkUKnow program. In order to share the valuable content from this session, a parent information evening has been scheduled for:
Wednesday 16 August 2023
6:00pm – 7:00pm
JPS staffroom
In order to attend this event, you must register through Eventbrite on the following link, tickets are free. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/thinkuknow-parent-information-session-tickets-680720743067

Sustainability with Mrs Bennett
Kaya Wanjoo – Hello and welcome,
The Noongar season is Makuru. Makuru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year in the South West. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.
As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and their food sources changed from the sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the land, in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo.
Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might see pairs of 'wardongs' (ravens) flying together.
Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.
Flowers that will start to emerge include the blues and purples of the blueberry lily (Dianella revoluta) and the purple flags (Patersonia occidentalis).
As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba.
There are still places left for this term, with spaces limited to 20 students. See attached invite for the term. The club will run from Week 3 to Week 9 on Mondays 3.15-4pm.
Remember to keep on bringing in your items for recycling. See the attached for what you can bring in. When dropping it in to the school please put it into the correct bin. Make sure items are not in a plastic bag and are clean. Our students diligently go through the bins in order to pack and send off for recycling and we don’t want nasty surprises for them. Our focus bin this newsletter is Coffee Pods – they need to be clean, not leaking and not in another bag. These are then packaged and sent to a local TerraCycle Material Recovery Facilities located in the same country in which the waste originates. Once sorted by category, the different material types are cleaned and then sent to third-party partners to process the materials into usable forms.
For example, metals and aluminium are shredded and smelted into metal sheeting, ingots, or bar stock. Glass is crushed and melted to be used in new glass bottles (if clear), or brick, cement, or concrete applications (if coloured). Rubber is generally cryo-milled into a powdered state for flooring applications. Organics are composted or used in industrial and commercial fertilisers.
Plastics are the largest category of material collected. These materials are size-reduced (made smaller by being shredded or ground), then melted and reformatted into pellets, flakes, or a powder format.
After TerraCycle recycle the waste into raw material, it’s sold to manufacturing companies who produce the end product and complete the recycling journey. These end products may include outdoor furniture and decking, plastic shipping pallets, watering cans, storage containers and bins, tubes for construction applications, flooring tiles, playground surface covers, athletic fields, and more!
If you would like to know more about what you can do at home for recycling, go to www.terracycle.com.au
Containers for Change
Continue to bring in your Containers for Change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the big blue bin near the library. Leave your ring pulls on but take your plastic lids off. Alternatively use our school ID number at a community drop off point C10339712
Did you know our blue plastic school bench near the front office was made from 15 000 600ml water bottles?
Worm Whisperers
Welcome to our Worm Wizard students who collect the organic waste from around the school and look after our worms. Amir, Riley, Kobi and Zoey.
Plastic Free July
As part of our commitment to this vital cause, we held our first Wrap Free Wednesday last week. There were two classes who were completely wrap free. Please think about the alternatives to wrapping food or using single packet item such as chips, popcorn and squeezable yoghurts. We all need to think of the impact these non recyclables have on our environment. Let’s see how many classes can be wrap free next time.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Sustainability Teacher (JESC).
Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
Term 3 has started with a WAFC Starkick football competition, 2023 Design a Footy Jumper Competition. The students got the opportunity to design a Football Jumper for their school.
Check out these stunning ink Jellyfish created by Rooms 1, 2 and 3. The students had fun learning new ink techniques, like tapping, blowing, and dripping.
