I hope everyone has managed to stay warm and dry over the past few weeks, as we have endured a few strong cold fronts. Unfortunately, this weather has also meant some illness across students and staff. If your child is unwell, please continue to keep them home and contact the school to let us know. If your child becomes unwell throughout the day, you will be contacted for further advice.
There has been an Olympic buzz across the school as teachers and students have followed the success of our athletes. This has included public announcements over the microphone and a torch relay! The inspiration will continue throughout the upcoming Paralympics, beginning on 24 August where approximately 174 athletes will represent Australia.
Combined Education Support Carnival
The annual Combined Education Support Carnival date is Tuesday 7 September for students from PP-6. Lunch order bags will be coming home soon and more information will be following.
Carpark Open
The new carpark is now complete, with 14 new parking bays for teachers and an additional disabled parking bay. This will bring staff cars off the roadside parking bays, to free up space for parent parking.
Please be aware that the parking rules around the school have not changed and the City of Joondalup rangers are out and about issuing warnings and fines. You cannot block driveway access, park under ‘no parking’ signs or park to block people’s line of vision down a street. You cannot use the carpark that is next to the neighbourhood centre as it is not ours to use.
Dogs at School
It is a privilege to bring dogs onto the school site. Please remember to always keep dogs on a lead and make sure that your dog is social enough to manage lots of children, noise and other dogs. Dogs must not use school grounds as a toilet because no one wants to play in a space where there is doggie do-dos.
Kindy playground
Joondalup Schools have received $130 000 to redevelop the Kindy play space. The current structure and boat will remain and the Kindy/ PP teachers and EAs are looking at some of the options that have been given by the playground designer to complement this. It is expected that this will be completed over the December school holidays.
End of school Day
A reminder that all families should leave the school grounds at end of the day. Playgrounds including the space behind K Block are out of bounds.
Parent morning tea
Last week’s parent morning tea was a chance to have a general catch up and a chat over a cuppa. The next morning tea is scheduled for Friday 10 September and will feature a speaker from APM. Service Area Manager Jonathon Clark and a colleague Shauna Van Steensel will be presenting some information around NDIS and answering questions you may have. For catering purposes, please RSVP to Kellie Carter on kellie.carter@education.wa.edu.au to let us know you are coming.
IEP Meetings
Teachers have been working hard to complete individual education plans (IEPs) over the past few weeks and will be in contact to hold meetings with you about these. These meetings are an opportunity for you and the teacher to discuss your child’s goals for Semester 2. After the meeting, the teacher will finalise the IEP and a copy will be sent home for you to sign. Please return the signed copy to the teacher.
Book Week (Save the Date)
There will be a Book Week dress up day on Tuesday 24 August so start thinking about your costume ideas! More information will be sent out soon.

It has been a very wet and windy start to Term 3 but Room 23 have already been working hard and learning lots.
We have been busy reading our first story of the term. This term we are doing an author study of Eric Carle and our first story we are reading from this author is, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We have read the story multiple times and completed some fun craft activities to create props to act out the story. Then as a class we created a story map which we can use to retell the story.
In the story, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ eats lots of different types of food such as an ice cream cone. So, we created our own Ice Cream Parlour in our dramatic play corner in the classroom. We are having lots of fun acting out working in an ice cream shop and have enjoyed playing with all the props whilst practicing sharing and turn taking.
We are looking forward to another great term in Room 23.
From Jasmine, Elnaz, George, Jaxon, Tommy and Corwin.
During Term 2, Room 26 have been learning more about our Australian history, including how Aboriginals used and respected the land they lived on, the impact of the British colonies and how they came to find Australia and about our local area of Lake Joondalup. Students enjoyed using actions to retell a dreaming story about The Charnok Woman which depicts the natural environment of Lake Joondalup. They participated in treasure hunts to find Aboriginal symbols and match them to their meanings and have been engaged in deeply thinking about the poor treatment of Aboriginal people in our history and meaningful ways in which they can show understanding, compassion and tolerance.
Every fortnight on a Friday, we have been exploring the five senses using their eyes, ears, nose, hands and the best part, their mouths. They have gone out of their comfort zones and tried so many new things. Sometimes they even create cool items like the edible cassowary. Check some of them out! One of the most crazy things that they have explored so far are octopus tentacles. Some children realised they even like the taste, but most said they wouldn’t chose to eat it again. I wonder what they will explore next?
The cooking program at Beldon has really seen some amazing dishes being prepared and the kids trialling new foods to eat too. The students have enjoyed cooking meals such as pumpkin cookies, chocolate pumpkin brownies, vegetable pasta, and garlic bread. The semester finished off with a Masterchef style cook-off with only the best dishes going through to the next round. Congratulations to Charlotte and Harrison who made it through to the semi-finals and prepared a very tasty fruit crumble as their final showcase dish. Can’t wait to see and taste what they make this term.
Room 26 works so well as a team and are really building their resilience to tackle new and unfamiliar tasks and exciting challenges. What a great first semester Room 26.
In the Kimberley region rock art was made by First Nations People. Many different groups created many different styles of rock art. Some of art has been dated to be over 40 000 years old. Some art is still being refreshed, and new art is being created. There are thousands of rock art sites. Kimberley rock art is mostly painted with different kinds of ochre that bond incredibly well with the sandstone. The art was usually painted in rock shelters where people lived and conducted ceremonies.
The students who attend Visual Arts, viewed Kimberley Rock Art and how the ochre paint was made. Using oil pastels in the colours of ochre they drew a turtle or a fish on brown paper. The paper was the crumpled up. After carefully opening it up dye was added. The paper was then pasted onto black card. It is bulging off the card to look like a rock wall.

After School Garden Club
Our small but dedicated group of students, parents and staff come together every Monday afternoon from 3.15 to 4pm to look after the garden.
We are planting seedlings and sowing seeds in preparation for a Spring Harvest.
There are still a few places available, see your teacher for a form or come on down to the garden with your child.
If you wander down to the Garden of Weedin you will see our lovely new stainless steel benches that will be used for potting, seed preparation and sorting of recycling materials.
Big news is coming regarding our Recycling programs, so stay tuned!
Well we have made progress this week with a lovely patterned concrete slab going down outside Room 34. This is where all our recycling programs will be based from. We are extending what waste streams we recycle, so we become even more sustainably aware. The future is in our hands and the generations that follow to stop using so many single use disposable items. The plan is to have recycling bins placed in this area.
Please continue to bring in:
- Batteries
- Coffee pods (make sure they are DRY and EMPTY). You can bag the grounds up and sent to school as well.
- Ring pulls from cans of drink
- Plastic lids from bottles (wash and remove inner seal)
- Containers for change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the BIG blue recycling skip near the admin area
I attended a fantastic professional learning day where Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities were delivered in hands on lessons for us to take back to school. Did you know these priorities are taught in many different learning areas such as Science, HASS and Maths? Our school was acknowledged for our progressive journey in these two areas.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Science/Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
