What a busy term Room 21 has had so far!
We enjoyed Book Week activities throughout the week, finishing with our dress-up day and parade.
Adhi has been a welcome new member to our class, and we have all enjoyed getting to know her.
Spring has sprung in our classroom where we have delighted in planting sunflowers, tending to them every day and watching them grow. Some have not been as successful as others, but we are very happy with the result.
Father’s Day kept us busy making amazing Father’s Day cards to celebrate the wonderful Dads in our lives.
We have been practicing really hard for our school Sports Carnival on Friday, and showed off our skills when we attended the combined carnival at Beldon Ed Support Centre last week.
During Health lessons, we have been learning about Yes and No feelings and our Body’s Warning Signs.
We have been working extremely hard during our 1:1, whole class, and small lesson time and have thoroughly enjoyed finishing each week with an experiment or sensory play each Friday afternoon.
We have been learning Geography with Room 22 and are all very excited to be taking Public Transport to the Zoo tomorrow.

Our class has been learning about how important it is to follow social rules regarding the sharing and caring of property. This semester we are being assigned Class Helper roles to understand how we can share and care for our classroom. We keep a role for two weeks so we get lots of practice.
Class Helper roles include:
Vacuum Monitor, Calendar, Book Monitor, Rubbish Police, Messenger and Lunch Orders.
We are discovering we can have fun doing our jobs, and that sometimes we like some jobs better than others but we have to still do the ones we don’t like!
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Cooking Up a Storm with Room 29
In Room 29 we have been practising taking turns, fine motor and communication skills through cooking. We have made many different treats such as fairy bread, porridge and cake. We have been learning about traditional Aboriginal food and got to cook and eat some damper. We love cooking!
This semester we have started our learning journey about Australia’s States and Territories. Each week we have focussed on a new location.
We have been identifying its location within Australia by drawing it on our map and have also had to research important and interesting facts about it.
These are our favourite places and sightseeing attractions:
Siena: I would like to go to Queensland because it looks fun. like the coral reef.
Jacinta: I learnt about Wave Rock, kangaroos and boab trees.
Jake B: Sydney is a big city. It has a zoo and the Sydney Opera House.
Jake L: You can go to the zoo in New South Wales. It has good beaches too.
Xavier: Darwin has lots of crocodiles. You can go in the water and watch them eat.
Marko: I like the crocodiles in Darwin.
Chloe: I like the coral reef in Queensland.
This term we have also started our Talk for Writing journey. Talk for Writing is a unique approach that uses spoken activities to develop students writing skills. Our story was ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, together we created actions for significant words and rehearsed the text. We then completed many activities to enhance our sentence structure, imagination and characterisation.
After this, students were given the task to innovate the text by changing the characters in the story. We have all really enjoyed this part and loved reading our stories to our friends. We can’t wait for next term to see which book we will be reading next.
Fish
The students in Rooms 2 & 21 created fish using clay. They rolled four different size pieces of clay into spheres and then flattened them. Texture was added to the clay using a variety of textured objects. The pieces were then joined together. An eye and mouth were added. Once fired the students selected coloured underglazes to paint the fish in a clear glaze was painted over the top to seal in the colour.
Turtles
The students in Rooms 2 , 16, 27 and the specialist class, created turtles using clay. Texture was added to the shell using a variety of textured objects and tools. Once fired the students used underglaze and glaze to paint the turtle.
Eggs
Following on from the 2D artwork of fried eggs, the students in Rooms 2 & 21 sculpted eggs using clay. They rolled two different size pieces of clay into spheres and then flattened them. They were then joined together. Once fired the students used underglaze and glaze to paint the egg.

Faction Colour Fun
Thank you to all students who participated in the faction-coloured hair spray on Friday. We raised $146.50 for our sister school, Srang Primary in Cambodia.
The Social Justice Team
Wanjoo to Spring. The Noongar season is Djillba. A transitional time of the year, Djilba has days that are very cold, some that are rainy and windy and others where the sun comes through. As the days start to warm up, you’ll hear and see the first of the new born animals with their parents providing them with food, shelter and protection from other animals and people. The woodland birds will still be nest bound, hence the swooping behaviour of the Koolbardi (magpie), Djidi Djidi (Willywag tails) and the Chuck-a-luck (wattle birds).
This is the start of the massive flowering explosion in the South West. It begins with yellow flowering plants such as the Acacias. You’ll also notice cream and striking blue coloured flowers. As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, you will see the flower stalks of the Balgas (Grass Tress) emerging in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.
Traditionally, the main food source at this time of the year included many of the land based grazing animals including Yongar (kangaroo), Waiitj (Emu) and the Koomal (possum).
After School Garden Club
Our small but dedicated group of students, parents and staff come together every Monday afternoon from 3.15 to 4pm to look after the garden. Our seedlings and seeds have popped their heads up and are growing vigorously. We should have a wonderful harvest in Term 4. Our worms are busy breaking down food and producing worm whiz for our vegetables. The compost heaps have nearly turned into soil thanks to the many micro-organisms and healthy bacteria doing their ‘jobs’. A big thank you to all the students, parents and staff who turn up each week to nurture, learn and share a love of sustainable gardening. Week 9 was the final week for the term and we celebrated our community togetherness with an afternoon tea.
Term 4 invite will go out in the first week, with spaces limited to 20 students.
Please continue to bring in:
- Batteries
- Coffee pods (make sure they are DRY and EMPTY). You can bag the grounds up and sent to school as well.
- Ring pulls from cans of drink
- Plastic lids from bottles (wash and remove inner seal)
- Containers for change bottles/cans (clean and LIDS removed). Place in the BIG blue recycling skip near the admin area
Containers for Change bottles/cans (clean and lids removed). Place on the large blue recycling bin near the Administration Office.
Please note ring pulls now need to stay on cans and placed in the large blue bin
Students from the upper years ESC and the After School Garden Club have begun to plan, draw and execute a mural using bottle tops collected from the community. This mural will carry an important message about keeping plastic out of our oceans. It has been a student led area of concern, with several very talented staff members contributing. It will also highlight just how many bottle tops we use as a society, with most of them going to landfill. We’ll keep you posted as we are photographing our journey.
Finally, take a look around the perimeter of the Nature Play area. Nerelle Phillips and her dedicated band of botanists have begun to revegetate this area with local native species of plants. The ESC has helped to place a temporary paving border around this area. If you venture up there please be mindful that students need to keep out of this bordered area to give our plants a chance to establish. As we become more sustainably aware of our ‘backyard’ the schools will begin to work collaboratively on some joint projects to encourage biodiversity.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Science/Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
