International Women’s Day
On Monday 2 March staff on the campus celebrated International Women’s Day together by starting the week with a full cooked breakfast. The Department of Education hosted a Women in Achievement breakfast at the Crown Ballroom. Dr Elaine Lewis from Coolbinia Primary School won the 2021 Women of Achievement Award, and was a very worthy recipient.
Michelle Cowan and Alana Dooley were inspirational guest speakers as was our Director General, Lisa Rodgers who acknowledged some inspirational educators for the impact to education they are making.
Neurodiversity Day
Next Monday, 15 March Joondalup Schools will be celebrating Neurodiversity Day. Neurodiversity Day celebrates that it takes all kinds of different minds, and celebrates these differences. Staff and students are encouraged to wear as many colours as they can on Monday in recognition of this day.
Harmony/Ride to School Day
Next Friday 19 March we are celebrating both Harmony Week and Ride to School Day. Students and staff are encouraged to walk, ride or scooter to school, while wearing orange as this is the colour representing Harmony Week. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Cycling or walking are simple ways for children to incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives. Children and young people need to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Research shows that children who ride or walk to school are more likely to arrive at school alert and ready to learn. We have created meeting points where families and students can meet teachers before school to ride/walk/scooter to school together. We also have a course set up around school for all students to participate in during the school day. See attached information.
Individual Education Plans
IEP’s are currently being finalised with teachers and will be sent home over the next two weeks. Please sign and return the IEP and we will return a fully signed copy to you. This IEP will form the outcomes on which we report on at the end of semester one.

In the Green Zone with Room 21
The students and staff of Room 21 have had a fantastic start to 2021.
We have been learning all about the Zones of Regulation, kind and unkind behaviours, and the size of our problems. We have also created a toolbox of preferred strategies we can refer to when we need help to return to the Green Zone, which is the optimal zone to be in for our learning.
The focus book for week 5 was The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. We enjoyed listening to the book throughout the week and participating in literacy activities around the book. At the end of the week we all chose our favourite character and drew a picture of it and wrote a sentence about it.
We used our pictures as designs to construct a plasticine model from. We were all very proud of our awesome models!
We have enjoyed our weekly visits to the sensory rooms and the sensory playground where we have been focusing on kind and unkind behaviours, communication, and friendship skills.
Aamiley, Aleeia, Goldie, Lilly, Logan, Mason, and Reza
Mrs Clayton, Miss D, Mrs Skinner, Mrs Regis, and Miss P
It has been a wonderful start to our year in Room 23 for our Pre Primary and Year One students. We have been diving into our shared reading sessions, focusing on reading books that are about a variety of animals. We read the book ‘Dear Zoo’ and made some amazing Lion Masks.
Last Friday we participated in our School Clean Up Day. We all got to wear reusable gloves and pick up the rubbish that was in the playground. We all enjoyed the experience and taking care of our school and even got an icy pole when we had finished!
We also have been all working hard on developing our social skills such as taking turns. We had lots of fun engaging in some play based learning experiences working with our friends to play in the dramatic play kitchen, with the dolls and we even had our own tea party! We all had lots of fun!
We can’t wait for the rest of the term and all the staff in our room are very excited for what is going to be a fantastic year in Room 23!
From George, Elnaz, Jasmine, Jaxon, Tommy, Corwin, Ms Spicer, Mrs Granville, Mrs Schwerdt and Mrs Scanlan.
Our school Clean up Day was held on Friday 26 February. Students and staff joined together to beautify our school. We are very proud to say that at the end of the day we collected 17 less bags than last year. Well done everyone, this means that we are putting more and more rubbish into the bins.
In maths we have been focusing on place value. We have been using different strategies to learn place value, such as pop stick, MAB blocks and even Lego blocks! The students have enjoyed consolidating this topic through a variety of games.
Some of the games include place value bingo, building place value Lego towers and games on the Prowise.
Whilst learning about place value, the students also have the opportunity to practice their turn taking and sharing skills.
Room 26 are an amazing group of students who have been settling into Year 4 and 5 by building friendships, sharing jokes, laughing and showing persistence to complete their class activities.
They enjoy working together to solve problems and have been demonstrating their skills in planning, negotiating and listening to others’ suggestions.
We have been learning about plants and their unique features and how they best grow. The class worked on investigating some strange plants such as a venus fly trap. Their task was to then design and make their own strange plant out of plasticine. Check out their amazing creations!
Each Thursday, Room 26 have been going over to Beldon ESC on the bus to participate in a cooking program. They are picking up some great skills in cutting, cooking and even washing and cleaning up after themselves. Their delicious meals of zucchini muffins, pasta bolognaise and garlic bread look and taste amazing. Look out for these up and coming chefs on Junior Master Chef in the future.
We are so excited for Music Rocks the Milk Bar on Sunday 28 March. A new venue for the first concert for 2021.
We’ll have a complimentary ticket per family in the next couple of weeks for our musicians and Joondalup staff. For more family and friends tickets will be available from Oztix via the link below;

A Busy Start to the Term in Room 16
Room 16 started Term 1 excitedly meeting our new class mates and teachers and learning all about each other. We have had loads fun with one another especially playing games in the playground during our movement breaks.
In mathematics we have been practising our place value, time and addition and subtraction skills. In English we have been doing recounts of our cooking and various stories.
We learnt about Chinese New Year in HASS, making lanterns, Chinese dragons and yummy spring rolls. We also did a recount of the Chinese New Year story.
We have really enjoyed our Sustainability lessons with Mrs Bennett, we have been learning about microorganisms and mini beasts. Room 16 have also created a garden bed, where we have planted lots of seedlings in hopes that we can cook with what we have grown. We even had a naming ceremony for our class garden gnome Tom.
As always we have had great fun rocking out with Ben in Music Rocks.
We were very lucky to have Miss Easson teaching us whilst Mr Hamilton was away, we were all very excited to welcome him back this week.
The students who attend Visual Arts painted lilypads for a community art project. The art installation is the work of artist, Sean Adams. It will be installed in the pond in at Central Park South for the Lumi Night in Joondalup. This event takes place over the weekend of the 26th - 28th March. It is a free ticketed event. Neurodiversity Celebration Day
Monday 15 March
Dress in Rainbow Colours
Our School Captains, saw that the school will be celebrating Neurodiversity Day on our school calendar. Students were unaware what Neurodiversity meant so took it upon themselves to do some research. They found this information and have now shared it with all students on our campus. We would like to now share their great research with our school community. Great work !
Please congratulate these students and thank them from Mr Notarianni and Mrs Bennett for their great work in STEM and Sustainability this week.
COLOUR RUN
There has been previous communications stating the Colour Run was to take place on 24th March. This is not going ahead and will take place instead be in Term 3.
