Harmony Day is a day when we celebrate the many different cultural groups in Australia and recognise the benefits that all of these people bring to our Australian society. It is about community participation, inclusiveness, celebrating diversity, respect and belonging. What a beautiful assembly we had on Friday 15th March to acknowledge Harmony Day. The song, I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing, was a perfect fit and it was so lovely to hear the whole school singing, it was a proud moment for me.
The Ride to School Day was a fitting end to a sensational morning. There were lots of smiles from everyone as they were riding around, including me. A big thank you to Jen for organising the campus to be promoted in the Joondalup Times for our ride to school day. Check out the article further on in the Newsletter to see photos and the Joondalup Times article.
Our Faction Carnival was a huge success thanks to the amazing Staff, very helpful and organised Faction Captains, volunteers, enthusiastic students and supportive families! Each student participated in team games and running activities.. It was great to see everyone working hard to prepare for the day with the early morning set up, the pack up at the end of the day and also the support they gave to all students. A big thank you to the families and friends who came to support their child, their faction and the school. Congratulations again to the red faction for being the victors and to everyone that participated with a positive attitude and a smile.
A reminder that the kiss and drive is a drop off and pick up point for families. It is not somewhere parents are able to park and get out of the car. If you need to park your car, or will be stopping at the school for some time please park in a different area.
All notes have gone out to parents regarding swimming lessons for next term. Swimming will be held in week 3 and week 4 next term. All notes need to be returned by Wednesday of week 10 this term.
Our school campus will be holding an ANZAC Cermony on Friday 12th of April at 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The students of Room 9 have had a productive first term during maths sessions. We have had some really positive learning outcomes when engaging in hands-on activities. As you can see, the students have enjoyed participating in a range of activities.
“I like working with the MAB blocks for place value” Malachi
“I like doing card games for maths” Tevarn
“I played the spinning wheel maths game. It was fun!” Karan
“Dominoes maths games are cool and amazing” Inca
“I learnt about place value playing cards” James
“ I like playing maths card games, I learnt 10’s” Kopelynn
“I like using MAB blocks during maths.” Hugh
It’s been a busy Term One in HASS for Room 25. We have done lots of learning about the different days we celebrate throughout the year. We’ve had lots of fun getting creative in the ways we have decorated our work.
We have been hard at work completing a range of activites in the STEM room over the last few weeks.
In Junior Primary, we have continued to investigate different types of weather. We used different straws to recreate the effects of wind and blow different items across a body of water. We then completed some races against our friends.
We have also been looking at how rain is formed. We used water, food colouring and shaving foam to recreate rain inside a glass jar.
In Years 4 and 5, students have continued to investigate water. We designed and tested different materials to create a plastic bottle water filter, with varying success. We will be repeating this activity again later in the term and trying to improve on our initial design.
During Week 5, students engaged in a range of maths-focused activities using technology we have previously used for Science and Technologies. We used our STEM mouse to create a number line and program the robot to move along it. We used items such as Osmo and Touchtronics tiles to complete counting and addition activities. We also used the Choose-It-Maker app to practice concepts such as counting on and skip counting. We will continue to touch on aspects of maths while in the STEM hub, to compliment mathematical learning that is happening back in classrooms.

Students in Room 27 have been viewing work by Impressionist Claude Monet. They have used oil pastel, dye and salt to create their very own Monet's Lily Pond.
At the end of last year, I was successful in applying to be a guest speaker at the 2019 Future School Conference and Expo, which was held last week at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This was an opportunity to engage in some high quality professional learning, but also to share the story of our STEM program at Joondalup ESC on a national platform. As part of the Inclusive Education Conference stream, I presented on the topic of ‘Supporting Students with Disability and Additional Learning Needs in STEM’. I was also asked to chair the second day of the conference, presenting other speakers from across the country up on to the stage.
Over the course of three days, I attended a Maker Space MasterClass, in preparation of opening our own maker space here at JESC. I also worked with teachers from across the country in the areas of coding, robotics and other future focused learning activities.
As the majority of costs involved for my attendance were funded by the conference organisers, we were able to free up Miss Hatton and Ms Martin to attend with me. They were both able to gain professional learning relevant to their roles in the school, as there were six different conference streams running at once.
This was a great opportunity that has allowed us to create links with a range of educators and service providers that we will be able to access to enhance the STEM program at JESC.

Students from across the campus came together on Harmany Day to create a piece of fabulous art work. The quote accompanying the art work says it all.
Students at Joondalup ESC competed to discover the ultimate faction within the Joondalup Schools campus by participating in the Faction Carnival.
Throughout the week, the students from Years 3 to 6 participated in Long Jump, Long Throws and the heats for Tug of War, with the students showing great interest and enthusiasm in each event.
The Friday began with Pre-Primary to Year 2 students beginning the sprints while the Year 3 to Year 6 students started with the team games. After completion of the events the students then switched. It was then the Pre-Primary to Year 2’s turn at team games and the Year 3’s to Year 6’s turn at the sprints. After lunch came the tug of war and relays.
A big thank you to all the parents and carers who came down and supported the students. Thank you to all the staff that helped set up and pack down the event and thank you to all competitors for putting on such a great show.
We have been successful with our application for a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for our project, Edible Bush Tucker Garden. The purpose of the project is to connect and learn about the diverse world we live in and to interact within cultures of our broader society. We will liaise with our school Aboriginal Education Officer and the after school Moorditj Club to research edible plants native to this area and on what to plant in an unused part of the school vegetable garden. Key activities will include preparation of the site, painting the garden beds, selection of plants, planting, signage for each plant including uses, an incursion run by Tucker Bush and a Welcome to Country ceremony to celebrate our journey.
A certificate was presented at the assembly by Lewis Rose from Woolworths Joondalup.
Joondalup Education Support Centre is one of 538 primary schools and early learning centres throughout Australia receiving a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant to help grow our next generation of environmental champions.
The grants are being funded with money made from the sale of the Woolworths recyclable Bag for good™ which was launched in 2018 when the supermarket stopped using single-use plastic bags.
The children and staff are looking forward to working and learning from this project and we’ll keep you updated on the results.

I am pleased to announce that we now have a Grow Free Cart that is set up near the office. The cart has been painted by the staff from Room 21 and Room 21 students will become the custodians of the cart.
"How does the cart work?" We have a simple answer: you give what you can, and take what you need. There are no prices, no bartering, no trading, no value. Like you would with family and loved ones.
What can I put on the cart?
Homegrown or homemade produce: fruit, veg, herbs, preserves, eggs, etc. Preferably grown with organic principles, without toxins. Grown with love is a strict prerequisite! Seeds, seedlings, cuttings and rootstock (Please label all, and heirloom seeds are best, as they can be saved from) All things gardening, whether it be gardening magazines, planters, worm tea, jars , paper bags and small boxes for seeds or produce.
Happy gardening and recycling,
Sandra & Stacey – Sustainability Coordinators
On Thursday the 28th of March staff and students walked or rode to school. Some students joined staff at meeting points along the way to school other came with their families. The days events culminated in the whole school joining together to ride a specific path around the school. Those students who didnt bring their bike took part in a walking path with music playing across the oval.
We purchased Davids trike from K Equip last year. James from K Equip has designed the trike to meet Davids needs. It has fixed peddles that go independently for David when the bike is in motion. The bike also has a handle to allow someone to push up hills and for when he fatigues, due to his muscle strength and endurance associated with his Muscular Dystrophy.
We self funded but there a funding options available through your service providers.
This bike has given David so much independence when we are away on our family camping trips and allows David to be involved with the other children. He gets a lot of attention from bystanders asking about his bike , which David loves.
This years Walk/Ride to School Day was the first that David has been able to fully participate in, and was heartwarming to see his smile and enjoyment on his face and the faces of his peers, teachers and other parents.
A special thank you to the wonderful Mrs Liz Hore for her endurance on completing four laps with David you are a star....... thank you.
The Cowie Family
This term students have had fantastic time learning new skills and enhancing existing skills in Baseball with the help of our coach from Vinten Sports.
Next term we will be offering a different sport. Keep your eyes out for that will come home early next term.
Staff and students wore brightly coloured socks, long socks, odd socks and just crazy socks on the 21st of March to observe World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.
WDSD advocates for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down Syndrome.
Thanks to all who participated.
