Happy Holidays!
To say it has been an interesting term is an understatement! I would like to wish the students, staff and families a very happy and safe holiday. I hope that everyone enjoys having time to unwind and be school-free. For those who are travelling, stay safe.
Thank you to the staff for all of their work throughout Term 2. It has been challenging at times, normal in parts, and unusually busy, even though the calendar appeared to have less on it. Take a moment to appreciate a well deserved holiday.
New Classrooms
Our Kindergarten students and students of Room 23b have new classrooms! Everyone has moved in and are excited to be in their own new learning space. Our Kindergarten students have moved to room 33, and 23b students have moved to room 28.
Over the holidays a pedestrian gate will be installed next to our new classroom, room 33. Families will be able to access the Kindergarten classrooms and play area directly next term.
Smoking on school grounds
A reminder to all families that smoking on school grounds is strictly prohibited. This includes smoking in your car if it is parked on school grounds.
NAIDOC Week
Yesterday the children and staff celebrated NAIDOC Week. Everyone participated in different activities including decorating stones, watching 'Big J and Little Cuz', making the Rainbow Serpent from wool, creating mosaic animals, and listening to stories.
I would like to thank Mrs Stacey Young for her leadership and organisation of this school wide event. Thank you also to the HASS Committee staff for their ideas and organisation, and to the many staff who were busy sorting out materials for the activities.
In the afternoon the combined schools' leadership teams had afternoon tea with some of our families. It was an opportunity to find out about the family connections across the community and to talk about the school. Thank you to Mrs Bev Shaw for making contact with all of the families.
We know that our celebrations are well ahead of the National events but we had our plans in place before the new dates were announced. COVID-19 has resulted in lots of last minute changes for everyone.
Stone Hunters
We started this week with a stone hunt. Children collected white stones that the student councillors and faction leaders hid around the school grounds. Every stone collected and put in the faction bucket meant another point for the faction. Hopefully all of the stones have been found.
Faction competition
The final faction token count for this term is:
1st Place | Green | 1662 |
2nd Place | Blue | 1414 |
3rd Place | Gold | 1356 |
4th Place | Red | 1354 |
Well done to GREEN !!!!. The children will be having an icy pole before the end of term.
Assemblies
From next term we will recommence whole school assemblies which is something that I am very much looking forward to. At this stage we need to observe the two square metre physical distancing requirement for an audience. Once we have a plan so that parents can be in the audience, we will let you know.
What’s coming back?
Next term will see the return of some of our usual programs:
- Running Club – Each Monday and Wednesday from 8.15am on the school oval
- Breakfast Club – Each Wednesday morning from 8.15am outside H Block
- School Banking – Each Thursday from 8.15am to 8.45am in B Block
- Gardening Club – Thursday after school commencing on 30 July 2020
- Parent Morning Teas – the first one is scheduled for Friday 14 August
Natalie Hatton
Principal
This term Room 26 has completed several class projects but our favourite has been making bird seed bells.
We talked about birds, especially Australian ones, and how they are more than just pretty creatures that soar through the skies and sing songs from high up in the treetops. They have many important jobs like spreading nectar, spreading seeds and gobbling up pesky insects. Birds help keep our gardens healthy.
So we decided to make bird seed bells to encourage more birds to come around our classroom. We followed a recipe and baked them in terracotta pots. Separating the egg whites and egg yolks was messy and fun! Unfortunately, not everyone got to make one but we can all still share the fun watching for the birds.
Each day we place our bells outside a window of our classroom. The birds are still a bit shy we think because we haven’t had any visiting yet. We just have to be patient!
My favourite part …
Isabelle – putting seed mix in pot.
Lily – Isabelle mixing.
Jacinta – watching the bird wag it’s long tail, the bird seed smells nice.
James – the galahs came but didn’t eat it. When the seeds get wet, they smell nice.
Tristan – mixing the seeds in the bowl.
Siena – we put the oven on and put the pots in the oven.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
On Wednesday 24 June we held our semster 1 Music Rocks Australia Concert. As families couldn't be present for the performance we hope you have all had a chance to view it on SeeSaw.
