Room 26 Flying With The Birds

This term Room 26 has completed several class projects but our favourite has been making bird seed bells.

We talked about birds, especially Australian ones, and how they are more than just pretty creatures that soar through the skies and sing songs from high up in the treetops. They have many important jobs like spreading nectar, spreading seeds and gobbling up pesky insects. Birds help keep our gardens healthy.

So we decided to make bird seed bells to encourage more birds to come around our classroom. We followed a recipe and baked them in terracotta pots. Separating the egg whites and egg yolks was messy and fun! Unfortunately, not everyone got to make one but we can all still share the fun watching for the birds.

Each day we place our bells outside a window of our classroom. The birds are still a bit shy we think because we haven’t had any visiting yet. We just have to be patient!

My favourite part  …

Isabelle – putting seed mix in pot.

Lily – Isabelle mixing.

Jacinta – watching the bird wag it’s long tail, the bird seed smells nice.

James – the galahs came but didn’t eat it. When the seeds get wet, they smell nice.

Tristan – mixing the seeds in the bowl.

Siena – we put the oven on and put the pots in the oven.
