P&C Disco
It has been a busy time at Joondalup with lots of events happening over the next few weeks. Last week was the P&C school disco which was well attended by students across the whole campus. There was a session for everyone, and the music, fairy floss and glow sticks were definitely a hit!
A huge thank you to the P&C for organising the event.
Science Week
Last week some of our upper primary students entered a robotics competition being held at Belridge Secondary College. They travelled with students from Joondalup Primary School to enter the robot they had created. Please see Miss Brough's article further in the newsletter.
Sensorium
Sensorium is at Joondalup! Our middle primary students will be engaging in a session each week on ”Ten Tiny Things” a story written by Western Australian Authors Kyle Hughes-Odgers and Meg Kinlay. Sessions are a live interactive performance by the talented actors at Sensorium. Students have the freedom to join in, move around and be part of the performance. Performers from Sensorium will be with us each Friday for four weeks.
Book Week
We are celebrating Book Week this week, and tomorrow is dress up day! Come to school in your favourite character. We will have the chance to see everyone’s costumes when we have a huge parade on the oval. There will be activities happening throughout the week.
Faction Carnival
Faction carnival is coming up! Some information has been sent out on SeeSaw about the day, and is included below. Students have been practising for the events, and have had run offs to determine which race they will be in on the day. They are also practising long jump, throws and tug of war, as these all take place before the big faction carnival held on Friday 1 September.
Interschool Carnival
On Tuesday 5 September Senior students (Years 3 – 6) will participate in the Education Support interschool carnival. This will be held at Beldon Education Support Centre. The junior carnival (Year K – 2) will be held on Thursday 7 September at Creaney Education Support Centre. This year families are welcome to come and watch on the day. The carnival has been spread across two days because of the number of schools and students attending. Beldon and Creaney are able to prepare activities and the day for these age groups.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
Wow, what a week! STEM was transformed into a robot workshop to celebrate this year's theme "Innovation - Powering Future Industries". Students participated in a variety of robot activities including robot puppet designing, robot biscuit decorating, recycled robot making, Lego robot stamping, robot jigsaw puzzles, robot iron beads, build a bot and coding. We had a very fun week learning and investigating the appearance of robots and how they move.
Science Week Challenge
Congratulations to our Year 4 & 5 students who came 3rd place at this year's science week challenge at Belridge Secondary College. All students did a brilliant job at showcasing and presenting their recycled robots. Well done!!
The Sensory Room is a fun and engaging environment where students can come in and explore different activities and engage in a range of different learning experiences. During class sessions in the Sensory Room, activities are aimed to work on several different goals such as communication skills, sharing, and turn-taking. We also work on following instructions and on gross motor movements. Many of these goals are supported through music and movement. The stretchy band has proved to be a particular favourite where the children have enjoyed acting out songs. We have explored a variety of activities during our sessions. The light table has been a big hit where we have worked on number, shape and colour. We are learning to take turns and share while using our new switch adapted toys.
From week to week you can notice changes in the children’s confidence in not only accessing equipment but also engaging with their peers.
Have a look at some of the fun we have been having so far this year.

Room 21 visit with Year Six Students
This Term we have been delighted to have our Year 6 mainstream girls joining Room 21 to learn PODD and communicate with our students. They have a desire to learn and communicate with students within our school. We have utilised this beautiful bond and connection between the students and therefore, most mornings the girls attend morning work sessions, wet weather indoor play or assist with students during recess or lunch around the school grounds.
Hello from Kindy A and B! We have had a great start to Term 3 and really enjoy reading and learning through our shared reading packs. So far we have read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Hippo Has A Hat and Where is the Green Sheep? For our books, we enjoy creating art pieces, sensory activites, matching fun and exploring and reenacting with all the story props.
We have been practising our fine motor skills through exciting and fun experiences, combining these activites with turn taking and social skill development. We always enjoy our time in the Sensory Room and K Block and have begun exploring the whole school, having a play in both Rainbow and Nature Playground.
At Joondalup ESC our staff wear Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) communication books to support our students. PODD books were developed by Gayle Porter (speech pathologist) as a way of providing access to communication for children with complex communication needs (CCN). PODD books allow our students access to communication that can be used for a variety of purposes across multiple settings.
Recently, four Year 6 students from Miss Mercer's class have shown an interest in our PODD books and were keen to learn more about how we use them to support students with communication. We arranged for them to spend some time learning about the PODD and why we use it. We then went on to have a bit of a practice “chatting” to one another using the PODD. The girls now wear their PODD books around school so they can interact and have a chat with students. They use the PODD books to ask what activity they want to do, ask if something is wrong and to direct them back to class when the siren has gone. It has been lovely to see the girls’ enthusiasm to learn about PODD books and it’s great that our students have extra support in the playground.
If you have any questions regarding your child’s communication, please feel free to contact me of your classroom teacher.

Year Six students have been busy demonstrating confidence, curiosity, imagination and enjoyment when engaged in their Zentangle explosion sculptures. Rooms 21, 22, 27, 26, and 25 have been exploring primary colours (red, yellow and blue) and used their tactile techniques of collage to create these inspiring Mondrain Art masterpieces.
The Department of Education’s Child and Parent Centre is facilitating a free online workshop Thursday 24 August: "Establishing Bedtime Routines".
This session explores different problems parents commonly face at bedtime and some of the reasons why they happen. The skills children need to get into a good bedtime routine are discussed and parents are introduced to positive parenting strategies to help prevent problems.
