Kaya!
I would like to congratulate students on the resilience they continue to demonstrate with the number of changes they have faced in recent times. As you are aware, COVID-19 continues to impact our school community and has presented us with challenges in managing both student and staff attendance. I am pleased that together, we have been able to make the best of this situation and to ensure your child’s continued learning.
Due to the ongoing disruptions presented by COVID-19, our school's Semester 1 Student Reports may look different to those you have received previously. Where possible, we will provide you with information about your child's progress towards achieving their agreed Individual Education Plan objectives. We will also let you know if we have had to delay or modify objectives. This round of reporting will include a Numeracy and Literacy comment along with a general comment. Photos will be included for students in Kindy through to Year 3. Specialist teachers will comment where possible in the areas of STEM and Sustainability.
Should you wish for additional information on your child’s progress, you will have the opportunity to discuss at a parent/teacher conference in Term 3.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we work together to provide the best learning opportunities for our students.

National Sorry Day
Last Thursday students displayed the purple hibiscus in their classroom windows, throughout the school to show the work they have done to acknowledge and understand National Sorry Day. The purple hibiscus flower signifies compassion and healing, representing the stolen generation and the deep trauma suffered by many as a result.
National Reconciliation Week 27 May-3 June ‘Be Brave, Make Change’
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This is celebrated in workplaces, schools and early learning services, community organisations and groups, and by individuals Australia-wide.
Yesterday we held our annual smoking ceremony as an important component of reconciliation efforts at Joondalup Schools and we were very happy so many of our families supported this event.
Emily Hamilton Leadership Lunch
We had the pleasure of having Emily Hamilton MLA visit our School Captains last Thursday for an in depth discussion about politics and law. Emily brought a replica Mace with her and explained the significance of this to the students, before placing it on the table for the duration. The School Captains enjoyed the discussion, some tasty lunch and a virtual tour of Parliament House. Emily Hamilton fielded a number of great questions, posed by our School Captains and we are already looking forward to the 2023 Leadership lunch.
School Development Day
Please remember this Friday 3 June is a School Development Day so no children come to school.
Uniforms
School uniforms are a point of discussion at almost every school. The process of deciding on school uniforms is consultative and involves parents, students, staff, P&C and the School Board. This transparent process ensures the decisions made around uniform represent the majority and meet the requirements of the Department of Education Dress Code policy. The Joondalup Schools uniform consists of items that provide students with comfort and safety as they participate in school activities, while encouraging equity and building a sense of community.
The schools work in collaboration with Uniform Concepts to have affordable items available for purchase. After speaking with Uniform Concepts, I can confirm that the delay in the school jacket has been COVID related, which has impacted on manufacturing and shipping. Uniform Concepts has been paying additional fees to have items air freighted in, to try meet demand as Winter approaches. We are expecting to hear when the next shipment is arriving soon.
Incorporated into the school uniform, black leggings/skins (or footless tights) and a long-sleeved black shirt are approved to be worn under shorts, skirts and polos to ensure students are comfortable and warm. The remainder of the approved items are those purchased through Uniform Concepts or second-hand through other parents.
The P&C are also hoping to build stock of second hand uniforms for families in need. If you have any uniforms you no longer require, we would be happy to take them off your hands. Please see the ladies in the front office.
School Canteen
The Joondalup Schools canteen is currently open five days per week. A fulltime canteen is becoming uncommon across many schools as volunteers can be hard to come by and ordering declines. Please support the canteen by using it regularly and approach the canteen to let them know of any time you may have available to help out.
Parent Morning Tea
Our next morning tea will be held in J Block on Friday 17 June at 9am. We have organised for a representative from Belridge Secondary ESC to speak to parents who have questions about education support high school. All parents are welcome but if you have a child in Year 5 or 6, please come along to hear the information and bring any questions you might have.
Student Health and Wellbeing
Joondalup ESC aim to provide your child with a happy and safe environment in which to learn and grow. We work collaboratively with parents and guardians to meet the needs of our students and ask that you work in partnership with our dedicated staff.
To maximise your child’s success at JESC, it is important that parents:
- Ensure your child is ready for school with hair brushed, clean clothes, underwear, pull ups, wipes etc.
- Provide healthy food for recess and lunch;
- Reinforce hygienic practices at home (e.g. washing hands after going to the toilet);
- Respond to illness or medical concerns (e.g. head lice) by seeking treatment;
- Provide medication and equipment that is up-to-date and in good working order: and
- Ensure your child is in full school uniform (unless there is an alternative arrangement).
School Board Nomination Opportunity
We are currently seeking nominations for a Parent Representative to join our School Board. Our Board plays an important role in contributing to good school governance so that school resources are used efficiently, and community expectations and the school’s priorities reflect the needs of students. Joondalup ESC School Board meets twice per term to discuss the school’s priorities and direction while seeking input from Board members. If you are interested in knowing more about being a Board member, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Anna Eason
Principal

Room 25 learnt the meaning of Sorry Day
Room 25 has had a week learning and understanding Sorry Day for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We have continued our learning from last year about the Stolen Generation and watched Kevin Rudd's apology. It has been wonderful to be immersed in Aboriginal learning and appreciate their culture.
In English we are reading and practicing the structure of a Narrative. So far we have looked at characters, settings and openings phrases. We are aiming to write a narrative near the end of the term.
From Room 25
We're going on a bear hunt in Room 23!
What an amazing start to a busy Term 2! We were all very excited to start back at school this term and can’t believe how quickly the time has flown by. We have been busy completing our Talk 4 Writing experiences focusing on our chosen text of, ‘We’re going on a bear hunt.’ We started by going on a hunt around the school as the bears from our classroom had escaped! Luckily, they left some tracks that we could follow to find them.
We have then taken the next step in our Talk 4 Writing process and innovated a new story based off ‘We’re going on a bear hunt.’ The students chose to change the character of the bear to a dinosaur, so we are now going on a dinosaur hunt!! We have then changed our dramatic play area to a Dinosaur Digging Site and we are having a great time developing our social skills as we dig for fossils using brushes and magnifying glasses.
One of our favourite activities to do in Room 23 is all the fun maths games we play together. We have a great time developing our number and maths knowledge while we play fun and hands on games with our friends.
We can’t wait for the rest of the term and to see what other exciting adventures we will go on this year!
From the superstars in Room 23- Vivaan, Keiharn, Graysonn, Amahni, Jude, Annemieke, Grayson, Roland, Kaiden, Ms Wilton, Mrs E, Mrs Scanlan and Miss T.
Room 27 read the Magic Porridge Pot
This term we have been reading the text called ‘Magic Porridge Pot’ for Talk for Writing. We all enjoyed our ‘hook’ activity of making a bottle volcano. After this we used adjectives to describe what we saw, heard and smelt.
We have enjoyed reading our new text and have now memorised it with the help of our story-map and actions. We have been practising to write interesting sentences by adding more detail.
Please see attached letter regarding the ThinkUKnow Parent Information Session for Year 5 and 6 students.
Musician’s Nomination for Music Rocks the Rechabite, Saturday, 25 June 2022
Perth’s newest and best live venue in the heart of the city will be all Music Rocks this June. The Rechabite has four levels, and it will be the famous second level hall that we will perform on, giving all our musicians something new and special to experience. This is an absolute triumph to be holding a concert here! Level One will be fantastic for lunch or dinners during the four days of concert for our families and friends too. The event is planned and run especially for you in mind and with extra and specific safety and space. Our Joondalup ESC musicians are simply fantastic! It will be up to families rather than the school to get your musicians to and from the venue.

The students viewed the Native Hibiscus. It is the Stolen Generation Commemorative flower. The colour purple denoted compassion and spiritual healing. The plant grows widely across Australia. Students drew, cut and painted the flower and worked with the paint to imply the textures of the flower. These have now been pasted onto large sheets of green card and displayed in the windows of the Art, Music and Science rooms.
We must be the change we wish to see.

Why are JESC students collecting and recycling:
- soft plastic bread bags?
- bread tags?
Trillions of plastics are made each year, many lasting up to a thousand years…
About 5 percent goes to recycling…
50 percent to landfill…
The rest finds its way into the environment, eventually out to sea forming enormous garbage gyres!
Since the beginning of Term Two, students from PP-6 have been extremely proactive in bringing in bread tags and soft plastic bread bags to recycle, so they do not end up in landfill…or our oceans!
Starkick All Abilities Football
Starkick Sessions: Saturday morning during Auskick
10.30am to 12.00pm
Starkick is an All Abilities football team for children. Founded and launched by the Coolbinia Bombers JFC in 2015, the program promotes inclusion, equality and opportunity and runs as an integral part of the Clubs Auskick Centre. Joondalup Kinross Junior Football Club introduced a Starkick team in 2016.
Starkick caters for children who by circumstance or choice are unable to join into the clubs existing Football programs. Children who may need extra support or time to achieve their goals are supported by a team of volunteers.
Starkick runs as part of the Auskick program on Saturday mornings at Windermere Oval, Joondalup.
Starkick aims to cater for all disabilities and runs by a simple mantra – “If you want to play we will find a way”
For more information regarding the Starkick team please contact Janine Gaskell at starkick@jetsjfc.com.au
