Swimming
We have had a super busy two weeks with swimming lessons each morning at HBF Arena. Thank you to all parents who have made sure students were ready on time, and ready to swim. We have had very excited students attending swimming each day. Thank you to our tireless staff who volunteer to go into the water to support our students to make sure that swimming is enjoyable, and stress free for our students. Everyone was quite tired by the end of the two weeks.
NAPLAN
Last week Joondalup Primary School engaged in NAPLAN testing. As you would be aware there were a few glitches in the system with the transition to online testing across the country. The difficulties connecting were widespread across schools. Although Joondalup Education Support Centre did not participate in NAPLAN this year we support the Primary School by ensuring we do not use any technology (no computers, internet, laptops, smartboards, ipads etc.) until after testing was complete each day to give students the best chance at sustained connectivity.
P & C
Our P&C have run a number of events throughout the Semester – the latest being at last weekend’s election. They have raised a huge amount of money over the last few events - $835 from the Easter raffle, $3085.52 from the Colour Run, and $583.85 from the Monther’s Day Stall. This is fantastic and could not have been done without the support by all families, thank you! The P&C have asked us for a “wishlist” of items to improve the Campus. We have given this to the P&C and they will make decisions about what they feel would be most beneficial to our Campus and will donate funds to the schools.
Red Faction Sausage Sizzle
On Monday the 27th of May, students in the Red Faction will be having a sausage sizzle at lunch time. The sausage sizzle is free, so students in red faction do not need to bring lunch in on Monday. The sausage sizzle is the prize the faction wins for having the most faction points in Term One this year.
Staff Development Day
A reminder that there is no school on Friday the 31st May as this is a Staff Development Day. Staff will be engaged in whole school reviews and strategic planning. School will not be open on this day. There is a public holiday on Monday June 3rd, and school will reopen on Tuesday June 4th..
Cross Country
Next Thursday the 30th of May is our whole Campus Cross Country. All PP – Year Six students will be a part of this, and it is held at Windemere Oval. Parents are welcome to come and watch if they like. Please see the timetable below to see when your child will be competing. Students can wear their faction tops on this day.
New Classroom
Our two new classrooms have arrived! Everyone has moved into their final classroom for the year now. Room 21 has now relocated to the new Pre-Primary Classroom – which is Room 29. The new classroom is lovely as it has kitchen and toilet facilities.
Room 22 has now taken over Room 21 and has an extra large classroom! Mrs Webber’s class will now be called Room 21.
WA Day
Joondalup Schools will be celebrating WA Week in week 6. As a campus we will have a number of tabloid activities happening on the oval on Thursday the 6th of June. This is also a free dress up day – and the theme is WA. Students may like to come along in their favourite WA sporting team attire – or anything that represents WA.
Natalie Hatton
Principal
The start of Term Two has brought lots of new and exciting changes, including moving into our brand new classroom! We have settled into the space well, and our new room is full of our favourite things, including the reading cave, the farm set, and even a new rug for mat time.
However, our favourite part has to be our garden. With a new outdoor area attached to the classroom, we set to work scooping in the soil and planting seedlings from the school vegetable patch. One of the most requested jobs is to water the plants each day, so fingers crossed we should have lots of vegetables and flowers growing soon.
History
We have been comparing transport, schools, technology, homes, and of course toys, as we explore our Past and Present class theme in History.
English
In English our sausage dogs help us focus on the different beginning, middle and final sounds we hear in words.
Maths
Who doesn’t like ice cream!! We are learning all about place value using these sweet treats.
Swimming
Swimming has been lots of fun this Term and we are all working hard to develop our swimming skills.
If you notice any suspicious activity on School Grounds, please contact Security on 9264 4771 or the Police on 131 444.
We have recently had two of our team begin their maternity leave and we very happy to let everyone know that they have both welcomed the newest members of their family into the world. We would like to introduce you to,
Lenny John Retuga
Lenny was born on the 15th of March, a very healthy 7 pound 1 ounce. Natalie and her husband Andre say they couldn't be happier and are loving being a family of 4.
Elyse Lorraine Murphy
Elyse was born early at 37 weeks on the 9th of April with a weight of 3.02kg or just over 6.6 pound. Renee,Gerard, Finn and Jasper are loving having Elyse home.
Congratulations to both families and we look forward to getting to know them.
Thank you to all of our families who attended our last morning tea. The date for our next get together will be Friday, 28th of June at 9.00am in J Block. We have arranged a guest speaker to come along from Carers WA to help answer your questions.
Lily's Wish From Starlight Foundation
Lily recieved a wonderful gift for her Starlight Foundation Wish. It is a Camper Trailer which will allow Lily and her family to have holidays throughout the year and for many years to come.
Lily and her sister Isla along with her Mum and Dad have already used the camper. We had a practice sleepover in the drive way at home, then at a local campsite for a few days. Lily had such a fun time and at the end kept saying "more camp".
The Ross Family
This Term in our CoderDojo Club, students across the campus are involved in a game design competition. Students are using Bloxels software and have to design, build and troubleshoot a platform game. Students are learning to use rules of physics to create levels that are playable but challenging. They are also using power ups, collectables, enemies and obstacles to create an immersive gaming experience.
The CoderDojo sessions are open to students from both schools – Years P-3 are every Monday lunchtime, and Years 4-6 every Friday lunchtime.

Garden of Weedin & Garden Club News
A big welcome back for Term 2. Garden club will commence Week 2 and finish in Week 9, so please get your forms back to school asap. Numbers are limited this term. Note there is no Garden Club in Weeks 3 and 7 due to staff meetings. Now that the weather is a little unpredictable if rain is forecast a notice will be pushed out via the schools apps by 3pm the preceding day.
Mark from Tucker Bush came to the school to help us with the selection and planting our new Native Bush Tucker garden as part of our $1 000 grant from Woolworths and Landcare. Rooms 19, 21 and the Moodijt Club all attended and will be responsible for this project. Our wonderful Bev Shaw who runs the Moodijt Club is researching uses of the plants with the club and will make signs for the garden.
It is planned to have the Noongar Seasonal Calendar made into a large board. Please note there are many different versions of this calendar and many different spellings for the word Noongar. Noongar means ‘a person of the south-west of Western Australia,’ or the name for the ‘original inhabitants of the south-west of Western Australia’ and are one of the largest Aboriginal cultural blocks in Australia.
In the south west of Australia, the Noongar seasonal calendar includes six different seasons in a yearly cycle.
These are Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang. Each of the six seasons represents and explains the seasonal changes we see annually. The flowering of many different plants is a helpful indicator that the seasons are changing.
The Noongar seasons can be long or short and are indicated by what is happening and changing around us rather than by dates on a calendar.
This six-season calendar is extremely important to Noongar people, as it is a guide to what nature is doing at every stage of the year, as well as understanding respect for the land in relation to plant and animal fertility cycles and land and animal preservation.
The children and staff are looking forward to working and learning from this project and we’ll keep you updated.

I am pleased to announce that we now have a Grow Free Cart that is set up near the office. The cart has been painted by the staff from Room 21 and Room 21 students will become the custodians of the cart.
"How does the cart work?" We have a simple answer: you give what you can, and take what you need. There are no prices, no bartering, no trading, no value. Like you would with family and loved ones.
What can I put on the cart?
Homegrown or homemade produce: fruit, veg, herbs, preserves, eggs, etc. Preferably grown with organic principles, without toxins. Grown with love is a strict prerequisite! Seeds, seedlings, cuttings and rootstock (Please label all, and heirloom seeds are best, as they can be saved from) All things gardening, whether it be gardening magazines, planters, worm tea, jars , paper bags and small boxes for seeds or produce.
Happy gardening and recycling,
Sandra & Stacey – Sustainability Coordinators

We would love to see more ESC students come down and enjoy a healthy and positive atmosphere. It does not matter if you are late to the session or cannot make it to school by 8:15am, the students can begin and join in at any time.
If you are interested in having your child join Running Club, please talk to Mrs Egan, Mr Lee or see the administration office for a consent form.
