Lets Talk With AAC
At Joondalup ESC we use a number of different Augmentative and Alternative Communication methods to support understanding and to encourage speech with our students. Along with our PODD books and communication devices, we also use Key Word Sign (KWS) and/or Auslan to support students.
KWS uses signs that are selected from the Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and also natural gestures to support individuals who can’t communicate with speech alone. Using KWS can help people understand what is being said to them and can be a way of sending a message for someone who’s speech is unclear or still developing. Children with communication delays often have things they want to say but have no way to do that successfully. Teaching KWS gives the individual a way to express themselves. For this to be successful for the individual, they need people in their lives to use KWS with them too.
Each newsletter I will share with you the signs we are focusing on for the fortnight. The first signs we are learning are Good Morning and Good Afternoon.

Good Afternoon

It’s important to remember that signs may vary slightly depending on whether you are learning KWS or Auslan and also depending on what state you come from. Adjustments may also be made to suit a child’s own capabilities. We are working together at school to provide consistent signs throughout the centre. If any of the signs you are using at home vary to what we are teaching at school, please let your classroom teacher know so we can adjust for your child.
