Room 26

Room 26 have enjoyed returning to class this term and have shared our stories from the break and celebrated David’s birthday.

This semester in Geography we have been exploring maps. We have looked at features of places around us and realise they look different on maps when viewed from above.

We have recently used Google Maps to explore the many different types of views that are available to us. These include close up street views, over-head, and ground level images. We have compared these to a version from a street directory.

We have discussed images we see from an overhead view like bridges, buildings, lakes, freeways, airports parks and schools and how these images are represented on maps and labelled them on our own maps.

Maps have many different purposes and are used by tourists, transport drivers, for town planning and to show us the world in political view- that is countries.

Architects also create floor plans. A floor plan is a map. We have drawn a floor plan of our own home. This was tricky for the teachers and students!

Some of us have learned about seating plans. This is also a map and we use them to find our seats in a large area when attending an event.

Tourists also use maps when they visit places on their travels such as going to the zoo and for other sightseeing.

We have learnt about how maps help us explore and we have been on a treasure hunt while following our maps instructions to move around the school grounds.

We have used our maths skills to plot coordinates to discover how to read maps. This skill also helped us find countries in an atlas.
