NAIDOC Week
Last week our Campus celebrated NAIDOC week. All classes learned about and celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. See further on in our newsletter for some photos.
Junior Playground & Sensory Rooms
We are beautifying our school! Our junior students are loving all the new activities and role play opportunities in the junior playground. Students can create music, camp, pretend they are running a household or work together to create things in the sandpit. We are also expecting to have some new mud kitchens arrive shortly. Our boat will be repurposed and become a garden area to make room for the kitchens.
Our sensory rooms have been painted by local artist Paul Deej and was recently featured on "Streets of Perth". They look absolutely beautiful, and shortly we will receive our sensory pod that will go into our room.

To celebrate NAIDOC week Room 27 have completed a range of activities.
We listened to a Dreamtime story and talked about the importance of story to the Aboriginal people. We made damper and carefully followed our recipe. We all loved eating the damper with butter and jam once it was cooked.
We also watched a video on Aboriginal art dot painting. We discussed the meaning of the dots used in paintings and the reasons why certain colours are used. We then created our own dot paintings.
We're back in the swing of thing and are enjoying the start to Term 3. We’ve celebrated Max and Layla’s 8th Birthday! Room 25 had a very exciting Term Two. We have had lots of visitors at school; paramedics, firemen, the Unklung music group and people from the circus. We had a big day celebrating W.A day with lots of fun activities. It has been great learning about community helpers and the roles others play in the community.

During NAIDOC Week we had a visit from Derak Nannup who is a cultrual guide at Yanchep National Park. Derek demonstrated the use of the didgeridoo, explained how our first nations people hunt and gather and even did some storytelling.

The students in rooms 1, 2, 7, 16 & 26 viewed rock art created by Aboriginal people, that is estimated to be up to around 40,000 years old. We then looked at the process in which paint was made from ochre and its application was studied.
The students looked at the meaning of hands stencilled onto rock walls. We used our hands to create our own handprints and after learning about dot painting we painted dots in traditional colours, around our hands.
